Re: Proposed Relocation of Five Black-Tailed Prairie Dog Colonies to the Pawnee
National Grasslands in Weld County, Colorado
Dear Mr. Murphy:
This letter is in response to your letter of December 13, 2001, requesting that the Board of
County Commissioners of Weld County consider approving the relocation of five Black-
Tailed Prairie Dog colonies to land owned by the Land Areas of the National Forest System
within the Pawnee National Grasslands in Weld County, Colorado.
Prior to any such consideration, the Board of County Commissioners must receive the
following information:
1. Has the Land Areas of the National Forest System approved the relocation?
2. Where would the colonies be relocated to within the Pawnee National
Grasslands?
3. Are there existing colonies at the relocation site(s)?
4. What is the distance from the relocation site(s) to any properties privately
owned?
5. Is the property at the relocation site(s) leased to any private cattlemen or other
private parties?
6. What methods would the Land Areas of the National Forest System employ to
retain the Prairie Dogs on its property?
7. Have any of the five colonies recently been subject to kill from plague?

Dear Commissioners:
The Southeast Corridor Multi-Modal Project (T-REX) requires the removal or relocation of five Black-Tailed
Prairie Dog colonies along its alignment. Three of these colonies, located on existing CDOT right-of-way in
Arapahoe and Douglas Counties (at the County Line Road ramp,Dry Creek Road ramp, and along I-225), currently
inhabit land that is scheduled for use by the project by February 15, 2001, or as soon as possible thereafter. The
Black-Tailed Prairie Dog species is classified under the Federal Endangered Species Act (ESA) as "warranted but
precluded"from protection.
Southeast Corridor Constructors and the T-REX project team requests your approval to move the prairie dogs to
National property located within the Pawnee National Grasslands in Weld County. The grasslands are owned by the
Land Areas of the National Forest System. The Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) will be working with Land
Areas of the National Forest System to arrange the necessary DOW Relocation Permit. However. State law (C.R.S.
35-7-101 through 203) requires approval from the County Commissioners in the receiving County before these
animals may be relocated across county lines. We request that you approve this relocation to Pawnee National
Grasslands.
Thank you for your consideration and response to of this request. If you have any questions please feel free to
contact Brian Berger at 303-357-8621.
Sincerely,
