Re: Quit Claim Deed for Fort St. Vrain
Monument to Platteville Historical Society
Dear Ms. Gartrell:
Thank you for your letter of December 15, 2000, regarding the Fort St. Vrain Monument. I
shared the letter with Weld County Commissioner Glenn Vaad. Commissioner Vaad has asked
Mr. Frank Hempen. Jr.. Director, Weld County Public Works Department,to initiate the work of
erecting the fence and signs, and to see that the property boundaries are adequately marked
(including the replacement of the boundary markers).
I will begin the process of obtaining approval from the Board of County Commissioners of a quit
claim deed for the property to be transferred to the Platteville Historical Society. First, however,
I will need to know if the Historical Society is a non-profit corporation or some other legal entity
which has the capacity to hold ownership of the property. Please call me at(970) 356-4000, ext.
4390, so that we may discuss this issue.
Sincerely,
/' f•.

Re: Response to the Proposal by Weld County Commissioners for the Platteville
Historical Society to Obtain Ownership of the Fort St. Vrain Monument.
Dear Mr. Barker,
This letter is in response to your letter of December 14, 2000 regarding the
proposal for the Platteveille Historical Society to take over ownership of the Fort
Saint Vrain Monument.
We accept the four conditions you listed in your letter for taking over ownership
of the Fort Saint Vrain Monument. They are very fair and we are looking forward
to working with you in the future.
There is one other thing that we like to ask if it is possible. If the Colorado
Department of Transportation agrees to erect a sign on Highway 85 near WCR
40, could the mileage to the Monument be included.
Sincerely,

RE: Response to Proposal for the Platteville Historical Society to Obtain Ownership of the
Fort St. Vrain Monument
Dear Ms. Gartrell:
This letter is in response to your letter of December 3, 2000, addressed to Mr. Bruce T. Barker,
Weld County Attorney, regarding a proposal for the Platteville Historical Society to take
ownership of the Fort St. Vrain Monument. Your letter includes four conditions to be satisfied
by Weld County.
The Board of County Commissioners of Weld County has considered the Historical Society's
proposed conditions, but offers the following in response:
1. Staff from the Weld County Public Works Department will determine and mark
the physical location of the boundary of the monument site. The staff will then
replace the boundary monuments which apparently were displaced and which may
be located on or around the site.
2. Weld County will place a road sign at the beginning of the monument road. The
sign will identify the site.
3. The Public Works Department staff will erect a split rail fence on the north, east,
and south sides of the site.

December 14, 2000

4. Weld County will work with the Colorado Department of Transportation to erect
a sign on U.S. Highway 85 at or near its intersection with Weld County Road 40,
which will indicate that the Fort St. Vrain Monument may be accessed off
Highway 85 via WCR 40.
Please consider the above proposal and respond to Mr. Barker. He may be reached at(970) 356-
4000, extension 4390. Please note that his office address has changed to the following: 915
Tenth Street,P.O. Box 758, Greeley, Colorado 80632.
Thank you for your interest in the Fort St. Vrain Monument. Mr. Barker will look forward to
hearing from you in response to this letter.
Sincerely,

Dear Bruce,
I am enclosing the proposal of the Platteville Historical Society for taking over the ownership of
the Fort St Vrain Monument and the land deeded with it.
The Society met at the site of the Monument and through that meeting and subsequent
conversation we present this proposal.
One word of explanation might be advantageous as to why we didn't request the fence on all four
sides of the monument grounds. We decided we should provide parking for people who would
visit the Monument in the future and not be on private land. We will use some other means to
indicate parking area.
If you have any question please contact me.
Sincerely,

Dear Bruce,
The Platteville Historical Society presents this proposal for taking over ownership of the St. Vrain
Monument and the land deed with it.
1. Weld County survey the site as to determine the actual boundary lines of the site.
2. Weld County place a road sign at the beginning of the Monument Road as it is
designated in the deed to the site,
2. Weld County fence the north, east, and south side of the site. We have enclosed
three bids for the fencing. The Society prefers the design of the first option given by
Houston Fence. It is also the lowest of all the bids.
4. We would like to have the County Commissioners to work with CDOT to get a sign
indicating a historical marker on Hiway 85 and at Road 40.
The Historical Society is looking forward to working with the County Commissioners on this issue.

Ruth Gartrell, President
