October 13, 2000 Weld County Department of OCT 18 2000 Public Health and Environment 1555 N. 17th Avenue RECEIVED Greeley, Colorado ATTN: Paul Smith This letter is a follow-up to our telephone conversations in August of this year regarding the waste disposal generated from the eight dog runs at the Windstar Kennels at 14077 Weld County Road 5. The kennel is a year round facility which has eight concrete surfaced dog runs outside of the holding pens. Six of the runs are 4 feet wide by 16 feet long and two of the runs are 6 feet wide by 16 feet long. We were informed that typically, 1 large dog occupies the 6 foot wide runs and 1 to 2 small dogs occupy the 4 foot wide runs, with a maximum number of 12 dogs at the facility. The dogs are released from the runs 2 or 3 times per day for a break on the gravel area outside the runs, which reduces the amount of feces and urine on the runs. The feces is picked up on 1 to 2 hour intervals throughout the day. The feces is disposed of in steel sack bags, which are thoroughly sealed and picked up by Western Disposal every week. The runs are hosed down with water, as needed. This water drains down the sloped runs into a concrete drainage pan at the end of the runs. This water is channeled down the drainage pan to the west end. At this point the water drains into a 4-inch riser pipe with a screened cover to catch the hair. The riser pipe is connected to a perforated drainage pipe which extends underground for approximately 10 feet to the north. This site is surrounded on three sides by a relatively large irrigation ditch, which does not allow enough room for the required 100-foot set-back between the ditch and a septic field. Although we have not accomplished a soil profile hole on this site, we do anticipate that the site has a high groundwater level, particularly when the ditch is flowing with water. This condition is not favorable for a subsurface drainage field. One type of waste disposal system which can be considered when there is minimal usage is a sealed vault. In order to determine an accurate estimate for the water usage, a flow meter was installed and is still installed on the water line used at the facility for this purpose. A record was kept for the first month's water usage, as requested. A copy of the document is included with this letter. An ongoing record is also being kept. From review of this document, it appears that approximately 2.15 to 2.45 gallons of water/day are used for cleanup. As Cj aye-4-(A- pLj y11 7/ /LO/G i P. O. Box 1728, 1040 5th Avenue, Lyons, Colorado 80540 2001-1887 Telephone 303-823-6867, Fax 303.823.6863 indicated on the water monitoring document, the pans are washed in the house sink and imported water is provided for drinking water for the dogs. In our opinion, the water usage for this purpose is low enough to justify the use of a sealed vault. We recommend a minimum 1800-gallon concrete vault. Based on an average of 2.45 gallons/day, the vault will require pumping at least every two years. The vault should be equipped with a warning device. In order to collect the runoff water, a concrete distribution box could be installed at the end of the existing drainage pan. A steel grate should be placed on the top of the distribution box. A 4-inch diameter pipe should be channeled from the distribution box into the 1800-gallon vault. An effluent filter should be placed on the inlet of the vault, which can be serviced easily and regularly in order to remove and dispose of the hair. A Zoeller "WW" Effluent Filter PIN 170-0078 could be used for this purpose. If there are any questions concerning this issue, please feel free to call. We do recommend that an engineer from our office examine the vault construction prior to backfilling. Geotechnical Engineering Project it: 2000-80 April 12, 2001 Weld County Department of Public Health &Environment 1555 N. 17th Avenue Greeley,Colorado 80631 On April 9 and 10,2001, Gary Rosson of Western Soils, Inc.,made observations at the Windstar Kennels at 14077 Weld County Road 5. The purpose of the observations was to examine the vault septic system in order to verify that it was constructed in accordance with our design recommendations submitted in our engineering letter dated October 13, 2000. At the time of the first observation, the construction of the vault system had been completed. The new sewer line had been connected to the existing 4-inch diameter pipe from the surface drain and was channeled into the 1800-gallon vault. The filter had been placed on the discharge end of the pipe in the vault. The warning device had been installed in the vault It was noted that there was not a direct connection from the west end of the concrete drainage pan, along the north side of the kennels, to the surface drain. We recommended that the western end of the concrete drainage pan be extended around the surface drain so that this water will have a direct path to the drain. The perimeter of this new concrete section should be mounded to make sure that the water is directed into the drain and does not overflow. At the time of the April 10, 2001 inspection,we noted that the new section of the concrete drainage plan had been constructed,as recommended. Based on what has been observed, it is our opinion that this vault system was constructed in accordance with our recommendations. If there are any questions, please feel free to call.
