Problem-Solving Approach
Please briefly describe the problem-solving approach employed for this proposed project.
Include problem identification, problem analysis, action plan/response and evaluation/assessment
of the response (including anticipated results).
Weld County is a large county encompassing over 4000 square miles. It has a diverse population
which includes differing racial, socio-economic, cultural, and age groups. Much of the
population of Weld County is located in small towns and rural areas. The Weld County Sheriff's
Office is responsible for police services in these communities and in the rural areas.
During the school year, specialized deputies interact with the children in the school districts
throughout these areas. Children are occupied with school activities and have limited activities
outside their residences due weather constraints and shortened daylight hours. This changes
during the summer months, when school is not in session and longer days and warmer weather
encourage outside activity. Additionally, smaller towns and rural areas do not have the resources
to provide summer activities for children in their communities. These children, left with time on
their hands and nothing to do, begin to cause problems, such as: vandalism, fighting, underage
drinking, drug usage, etc....
At the same time that these children have unoccupied time, the officers that have been working
in the school districts throughout the school year have un-allotted time. These are also the same
officers that have been working during the school year with these children, conducting programs
such as D.A.R.E. and G.R.E.A.T..
During this summer, these specialized officers will be providing recreational activities for
children in the parks in their communities. This will not only help to keep children busy during
the day and out of trouble, it will allow officers continue the relationships that they built with the
children during the school year. Officer's time for this project will be paid by the Weld County
Sheriffs Office. This grant is requesting funding for recreational equipment, water coolers, and
recreational outfits for the officers involved which delineate them as sheriffs officers. There are
currently four officers assigned to this unit, thus there would be four sets of equipment.
Each of the towns that the Weld County Sheriffs Office is responsible for have agreed to allow
usage of their parks, buildings, or other necessary areas for this program.
The time line for this project will be as follows:
May 15, 2001 Equipment purchased and provided to Community Policing
Officers
June 1, 2001 Equipment and officers in place providing recreational
opportunities to children.
September 30, 2001 Final report due to the Colorado Regional Community Policing
Institute.
Assessment and success of this project will be determined by the number of children attending
the recreational sessions in each town or area.
We, the undersigned, agree to work in partnership to address the community problem identified
in the grant application and fulfill the terms of the attached partnership agreement.
