An issue has be raised that there is a possibility that cottonwood trees may be impacted by the dewatering planned on the 1 acres start up areas in each lake area. Some of the trees along the river are owned by Mr. Sharkey, president of the PS&G, and some are owned by adjoining land owners. Our primary concerns are for those not on the mine site and it is felt that Mr. Sharkey's trees are his to do with as he wishes . After discussing this issue with our water and wildlife consultants the following mitigation plan was decided upon. This mitigation plan is a very simple solution to the precon- ceived problem. Prior to dewatering, a shallow recharge trench will be excavated along the side of the dewatering area closest to any trees. This trench will be excavated through the topsoil and one foot into the gravel layer. Water from the dewatering operation will be placed in this trench to recharge the ground water thus mitigating the draw down in the direction of the trees. This trench will be kept full of water during dewatering and once the dewatered area refills it will be allowed to dry up. The trench would then be removed as mining progresses.
