RE: Sparboe Horizon Corporation
Sparboe Farms of Colorado
Dear Sirs:
Please be advised that Sparboe Farms contacted the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service
(NRCS) in April of last year to get started on a conservation plan for their property located east of
Hudson, Colorado in Weld County. Russell Riley of Hudson was the farmer who Sparboe had contacted
to do the work for them. NRCS recommendations were to seed the entire area to permanent vegetation
due to the highly erodible nature of the soils. Mr. Riley did plant a sorghum cover crop in early July but
due to extreme droughty conditions, the cover crop failed. Weeds had been sprayed and controlled.
Representatives of Sparboe have met with the NRCS early this month to to discuss options for this
ar. We have provided our recommendations to both Sparboe and Mr. Riley. Our recommendations
include cover crop, weed control and grass seeding this fall, as well as other options for erosion control,
should the cover crop fail again this year.
This site provides some real challenges in getting a cover crop establaished as well as getting the
grass established. At this point, Sparboe has been agreeable to NRCS recommendations and has been
trying to meet our specifications.
