Dear Weld County Commissioners:
Some months ago, the State of Colorado received a $19.8 million federal TANF
bonus for the reduction in the rate of out-of-wedlock births. The State must use
this bonus for any TANF-related purpose.
The AFDC Coalition was formed more than 12 years ago to advocate for those
who receive public assistance and for low-wage working parents. In the last two
years, the need for subsidized child care has grown as parents try to support their
families in low wage jobs and further their training in hopes of improving their,
and their families', future. Yet thousands have lost child care due to shrinking
child care dollars. On entry-level wages, parents simply cannot bear the full cost
of child care. Many have to resort to unreliable and less than optimal child care
situations, which can jeopardize their employment. Others cannot continue
education or training that could lead to less reliance on public aid. Good child care
can also make a difference for the next generation, by preparing children well for
school and relationships.
We understand that $12 million of the bonus money will be distributed to counties
through their TANF allocations. We ask you to consider using your share for
child care. No other purpose is quite so intertwined with families' quest for self-
sufficiency.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincer ly,
