Dear Mr. Reisman:
AIG Aviation, Inc., is the claims handling facility for The Insurance Company of the State of
Pennsylvania, the aircraft hull and liability insurance carrier for Messrs. Bruce Thompson, Tim
Thompson, and Scott Thompson and their 1964 Mooney M20C, N1920C. In that capacity, we have
been requested to investigate the circumstances surrounding an incident involving the aircraft that
occurred at the Gtceley-Weld County Airport on December 28, 2002.
We are advised that Mr. Scott Thompson was taxiing the involved aircraft northbound on the taxiway
between T-banger Row 6 and T-hanger Row 13, after having left Beegles Aircraft Service. According to
Mr. Thompson, the paint on the taxiway centerline is extremely faded and virtually "non-existent". He
indicates that as he was taxiing, the nose of the aircraft suddenly dropped and he heard the propeller
blade tips strike the pavement. The subsequent examination of the propeller and the taxiway confirmed
that a propeller ground strike had occurred, and that the nose gear of the aircraft had dropped into an
unmarked and nearly invisible drainage hole in the taxiway. Fortunately, a grate covers the drainage
hole, thus preventing the entire aircraft from dropping into that depression. The hole is however, of
sufficient depth to have caused the propeller blades to strike the pavement when the nose wheel dropped
into the depression. For your convenience, I am enclosing photographs of the damage to the involved
aircraft, as well as of the taxiway and drainage depression in question. (See attachment #1.)
MG Aviation, Inc., is being called upon to address damages to N1920C in the estimated amount
$9,813.30. That figure is based on a bid in the amount $2,688.30 for the R&R of the engine and
propeller, submitted by Air West Flight Center, Inc., in Longmont, Colorado; an estimate in the amount
$5,425.00 to accomplish an engine disassembly and inspection from Aircraft Cylinders & Engines, Inc.,
in Fort Collins, Colorado; and a bid in the amount $I,700.00 to repair the propeller, submitted by Rocky
Mountain Propeller Service, Inc., in Erie, Colorado. (See attachments #2, #3, and#4.) In turn, we will
be looking to the Greeley-Weld County Airport for reimbursement of the costs associated with the
repairs to the aircraft.
