Subject: planning commission meeting
Dear Commissioners: As you are doubtless aware by now the August 19, 2003 meeting of the Weld
County Planning Commission could not be held because of a lack of a quorum. The hearing room was
filled with citizens wishing to testify who were understandably irate for having come long distances only to
be turned away[even though an opportunity was given to make their testimony a part of the record].
You might want to consider the following:
[1] Check the attendance of planning commission members at hearings to evaluate their performance in
that regard. There have been several hearings where only 5 commissioners were present.
[2] Evaluate the wisdom of holding alternate hearings at the south Weld service center as it imposes
longer travel distances for most members to hear a minority of the cases at greater expense to the
County, even though it might provide easier access to hearings on local cases by area citizens.
[3] Reflect on the effects of your decision not to appoint immediately a new commissioner on the
expiration of the term of Fred Walker, irrespective of any anticipated district or at large changes in
commissioner representation.
I would appreciate a response to this communication.
Thanks, John Folsom
