Presently there is a large gravel pit to the East of the proposed site. The State Highway Department made major use of this pit during the construction of U.S. Highway No. 85. The pit has previously been known as the Tucker Pit or the Thomas Pit. It has been used by other contractors since. Weld County has used this old pit for the past three (3) years to obtain sand and gravel to use on County roads in the area in their gravelling and maintenance program. The gravel from this location is suitable for crush- ing and therefore, one of the better sources of material in this area. The County plans to extend this existing pit to the West and have obtained a 10-Year lease for the material from the Lehr Pit. Operation of the pit will be intermittant. The County, as budgeted or as a specific need arises , will move equipemnt to the site; the material will be processed and hauled to the jobsite. Normally, all material excavated and processed will be removed from the site and no major stockpiles will remain. Operating equipment will consist of dozers , loaders , trucks and a portable crusher. The County plans to continue the mining as it has been done previously, i .e. , moving into the Easterly face of the-site, across its North-South width. Existing topsoil will be removed from the area to be mined and placed on the previously exposed and finished pit area. Any excess topsoil will be stockpiled for the final reclamation process. The mining and processing will then take place. As each block of mining is completed, the pit edges will be finished to a 4:1 slope. The operation will be completely "dry" as there is no surface or ground water on the site. It is anticipated that size of the area to be worked at any one time will not be more than two (2) Acres. Initial quantity estimates indicate approximately 200,00 CY on the site. The County estimatesa 15 to 20 year life of the proposed pit. 11 EXHIBIT D 0 0 WELD COUNTY SOIL SURVEY PROJECT NO . - PROJECT ,6C4 %LIZ <.4ivey DATE SAMPLED ,S/j/j? /geo,00.r,O /4 LOCATION jfpttQ Tio/✓ Tact .fS SAMPLE NO. / STATION ' - BORING NO. - SOIL TYPE 4r A .,,' (,o,Ay,7 DEPTH SAMPLE REMARKS : /."e-' ,v4ie Ator.Sff/A4, Ar o-vt T m „MAW/ /on s €.2F Toi/J -Au iii_- ..Clnt42/ AS/n%5"d A20 cr %sir PFa 4 W.U/_-g /Lore ///on•.a_f J SAMPLED BY) ,e,„ • • • 12 EXHIBIT D , f j ✓L.. / " _l GRAIN SIZE CLASSIFICATIO PROJECT acres.eSu vsy PROJECT NO. — __ SAMPLE NO. 1 - ---_ DATE OF TEST -517_/7,' -- LOCATION o yypf __ /i gact..a) SAMPLED BY CLASSIFICATION > ,Pc a/ TESTED BY ee€ kw?, Curs --- WEIGHT OF DRY SAMPLE AND CONTAINER _ co( 7z,/p WEIGHT OF CONTAINER 306 , do WEIGHT OF DRY SAMPLE 6S , SO GRADATION SIEVE WEIGHT RETAINED % RETAINED % PASSING 1 SPECIFICATION ;; ,- - - loo - - - 2 -A- 3 as. 2O--- l3 66._ 84__,.a //Z / 7230 7. e_ ._ / z9/ . /S ye. 3/ 66, 8 fir /0/. .35- 9 ?8 6a S- 2/9. 9.6 ' ___.._2,02_ -_ 963_____ ._. r/0 a96 /o.s . A mixture of grasses suitable to the area has been recommended by the Soil Conservation Service. As noted in the soil des- criptions , this area is poorly suited to windbreaks and environmental plantings. As outlined in the Mining Plan, the County will initiate the reclama- tion plan as part of the mining operation. Thts area is a gravel out- break and there is essentially no topsoil material existing. The exist- ing vegetation and soil fines will be replaced on the site to provide as good a growth medium as possible. All finished areas will be shaped to not exceed a 4:1 slope. All areas will be left in a rough condition to minimize wind erosion and runoff and encourage natural re-seeding. Upon completion of the pit or the end of the lease, the County will complete the seeding of the site in accordance with the Soil Conservation Service recommendations. See Exhibit I & J, pp.21-26 of this report. 17 EXHIBIT E EXHIBIT G WATER INFORMATION The nearest defined surface flow is Lone Tree Creek located approximately one-half (1/2) mile to the East of the site and abount twenty-five (25) feet lower in elevation. Previous mining has not revealed any ground water at the site. Therefore, it is our opinion that neither the surface nor groundwater systems will be directly affected by this mining opera- tion and that no discharge permits will be required. Water will be used in the operation of the pit on the crusher; . as dust control on the site; and on the gravel roads used for hauling. A water tank truck will be assigned to the project when it is in operation. Water will be obtained by permission from stock water ponds or springs in the area , or hauled from the County Shops in Greeley. No major amounts of water will be used. 18 EXHIBIT G ii MINED LAND WILDLIFE QUESTIONAIRE for limited impact and select regular mine applications 1. Name of Company/Mine: WELD COUNTY (LEHR PIT) 2. The soils on these sites consist mainly of Cascajo or Peetz gravelly sandy loam. Descriptions of each have been enclosed for your review as well as vegetative inventories for the Lehr, Wilson and Ehmke pit'•areas. Vegetation adjacent to the Sheffler pit consisted primarily of crested wheatgrass and yellow sweetclover. Prior to actual seeding, the area should be shaped so that slopes do not exceed a grade of 4: 1 . Topsoil should then be replaced to a minimum depth of 6 inches. Selection of species was based upon existing vegetation near the sites as well as the ease of establishment exhibited by certain grasses on the soils involved. I have made two different seeding recommendations to be used on the four sites arid they are as follows: I, _Lehr, Wilson, and Ehinke_pits l ziac,to Varloty 3cieA % of Aix, be seeded Acres Total PL;' ' Vaughn Sideaats grama 50 4. 5 lbs. 4y ± 220. 5 lbs. PLS The above seeding rates are based on 40 PLS per square foot for critical area plant- ings. The seed should be planted to a depth of * to 3/4 inches using a grass drill equip- ped with a satisfactory feeding mechanism, agitator, double disk furrow openers and packer wheels. A straw mulch should be applied at the rate of 4000 lbs./ac. and should be crimped into the soil to prevent blowing. Several other mulching methods are available and I have enclosed a copy of our mulching standards and specifications for your use. Prior to seeding, fertilizer should be applied at a rate of 40 lbs. of phosphorus and 40 lbs. of nitrogen per acre. Seeding should be done in the fall of the year, usually after October 31st, when the ground is sufficiently cold enough to prevent germination before the next years grow- season. Spring seeding (before April 15th) is also acceptable, but not recom- mended, since spring tillage operations tend to deplete soil moisture. if a grass drill is not available and a broadcast method of seeding is used, the seeding rate should be doubled and the seed raked into the soil to insure good seed to soil contact. It is important that all critical area plantings be protected from disturbances by people, vehicles and livestock until the new vegetation has sufficiently been established.
