Congratulations to her on her victory and this Editor heartily thanks BOTH Bill Webb and Mrs. Zambrano for being willing to run for the position. Taking the voters' "voice"as an affirmation of the need for an accomodation of bilingualism in our Town, perhaps it's time for our Town Administration and our Board of • Trustees to recognize that all notices, pamphlets, paperwork of any kind, should be done in both English and Spanish so as to be readily available to the Spanish speaking contingent of our community. This shouldn't be any hardship to our Administration office since we have a bilingual Deputy Town Clerk, Mart We should perhaps go one step further and have all signs inviting "the public" to any function, whether it be civic, club or Town doings printed in both languages, also. A bit more work, to be sure, but the "world it is a-changing". Perhaps with Mrs. Zambrano's help and her contacts in the bilingual community, this paper will be able to finally find volunteer help in translating the paper into Spanish? We would sure appreciate itll How about it, Mrs. Zambrano? Total votes were 212 with Mrs. Zambrano receiving 130 votes and Bill Webb 82 votes . _ - interviews and history or the area. 2,- Now I am enjoying retiremb,it. I play the keyboard with a senior mL_,cal group where I often do comical and puppet songs. For several years I have taught writing class for seniors in the Commerce City Senior Center. .---, My great, great Aunt Sarah told wonderful stories of her life. One day I took my stenotype machine and recorded the stories she related. I wrote and illustrated a fictionalized account of those true stories. The book was published weekly in the Fence Posts magazine out of Greeley. At the present a column called "Can You Guess the Year?"that I write and illustrate is published monthly in that magazine. I have lived in Lochbuie for three years and like it. It's peaceful. I like people and I'm looking forward to writing for this little new newspaper and hope to get better acquainted with more people in this community. `Over 80 Million! by Tab E Katt Tab E. Katt is a 4th generation Colorado native and a 10 year resident of Lochbuie who has previously served on the Town Board. There isn't one of us that wouldn't like to win that in the lottery. But this isn't about the lottery. This is about the number of kittens that can be reproduced by one unspayed female cat and her offspring over a 10-year period. Hard to believe, isn't it? But it is a sad fact. You can look in any nook and cranny in Lochbuie and find the evidence of it. Some of the cats you see might be house pets unwisely allowed to wander outside. But the majority are strays or ferals (wild cats), the direct offspring of cats abandoned, dumped or simply ignored by irresponsible owners. Left to fend for themselves, life is a constant struggle for these unfortunate creatures. They must find food, water and shelter while avoiding speeding cars, malicious humans, dogs, coyotes, foxes and diseases. Meanwhile Mother Nature is still telling them that they must reproduce more litters, they don't have a choice. Sadly, a large number of the kittens born, die within a few days. ____________.___________________ esearch is now proving that n essly removing and killing these homeless cats only creates another hopeless cycle where new cats move into the area and face the same perils of daily life and bring new diseases with them. Public and private agencies across the country and around the world now recognize that the only true and humane way to the cycle is to trap the existing cats, spay or neuter them and then release them back in • ' final environment. There are a growing number of grassroots organizations springing up in neighborhoods and small towns just like Lochbuie that are managing their local population of homeless cats. In addition, there are larger scale organizations that help with guidance, education, resources and low-cost and no-cost spay and neuter facilities. These organizations are made up largely of volunteers, people just like you that are kind enough to care and caring enough to do something about it. There are many people in this town that may put food out or even take further steps to help these animals, but it's time to get organized. Anyone willing to help form a group in the Lochbuie area or for any further information please call 303-919-0732. Remember...lf you are not part of the Humane solution, you are part of the problem. 5 "••••• These programs are now used successfully by caretakers in the U.S. who trap, sterilize, and vaccinate feral cats —then return them to their habitat. Caretakers supervise the colonies, providing food, water and shelter. They also monitor the health of the cats, providing medical treatment when necessary. Cats living in managed colonies can live for ten years and longer. What is the result of this compassion? Healthier cats and a declining opulation. Alley Cat Allies has become the leading force in promoting TNR as the humane solution to feline overpopulation. For example... In Dallas, TX volunteers formed organizations that focus solely on sterilizing feral cats in several locations, including two college campuses, a park, and residential neighborhoods. A network of skilled caretakers and veterinarians has developed across the country, in cities like New Orleans, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Charlotte, Little Rock, and Atlantic City who, with the help of Alley Cat Allies'literature and training clinics, practice Trap-Neuter-Return on thousands of feral cats. A network such as this never existed before Alley Cat Allies. Alley Cat Allies is the only national clearinghouse for information on feral cats _and their care.-- __ - - Alley Cat Allies 1801 Belmont Rd.. NW,Suite 201,Washington, DC 20009-5147 www.alleycat.org "Alley Cat Allies is doing an impressive job in changing attitudes towards feral cats in the U.S. We could hardly hope for a more energetic, serious and dedicated organization." Ellen Perry Berkeley, author of Maverick Cats r Dear Caring Friend, We are writing to you today because we need your immediate help. 4/ Maggie knew they would not live long so obeying an instinct deep within, she made a painful decision. She gathered up her three stronger kittens and moved them to another box farther down the alley. Finding food for herself and the remaining kittens was all she could manage... They make their homes wherever they can find food...near dumpsters, behind restaurants and shopping centers. As many as half of all kittens die soon after birth. Thousands of cats die each day from hunger and neglect. As her surviving kittens grew, Maggie taught them to protect themselves from harm. They learned the skills necessary to stay alive, just as Maggie had, and they became wild, or feral. Soon other cats and kittens, driven by the same survival instincts, joined them near their food source. Another "colony" was formed. No one knows the exact number of feral cats living in the United States today, but the number is estimated in the tens of millions! You might think that animal shelters should take care of these cats. Unfortunately, most shelters already have their hands full with the thousands of stray animals left on their doorstep every year. And, sadly, many people who thought they could care for an animal find the responsibility too much and turn them over to shelters, or just simply abandon them. And because feral cats are wary of human contact, they are difficult to deal with in a shelter. Tragically, the conventional method of dealing with these stray and feral cats is all too often immediate killin . ut the systematic killing of feral cats is not the answer. Nor is it humane. That's the reason we started Alley Cat Allies in 1990. We know that the spaying and neutering of stray and feral cats is the only humane way to stop breeding and overpopulation. Reducing their populations is the answer we all seek. Alley Cat Allies offers an effective and humane alternative. It starts with controlling , the growth of feral cat colonies through the Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) method devel ed in Britain over 20 years ago.
