Box 758 Greeley, Colorado 80632 i COLORADO October 8, 2004 Ms. Lindsey Janssen 309 Pelican Cove Windsor, CO 80550 RE: Great Western—OmniTrax Railroad Crossing on WCR 66 (Eastman Park Drive) Dear Ms. Janssen Thank you for your letter to Commissioner Dave Long expressing concern for the safety of the driving public at the railroad crossing on WCR 66 (Eastman Park Drive). Our Public Works Department has inspected this location and identified the action necessary to mitigate the problem you referenced. As you noted, the problem is with the abrupt grade change at the track crossing. The United States Department of Transportation and the Colorado Public Utilities Commission strictly regulate the division of responsibilities when work is needed on railroad crossings of public roadways. While the most significant part of correction measures necessary are the responsibility of the railroad company,we will coordinate with them in whatever means necessary to mitigate this problem. We will make immediate contact with Mr. Shawn Vecellio, Roadmaster for OmniTrax Railroad, to report and coordinate a maintenance schedule. We will take corrective action to the road elevations during the month of October to improve the crossing rideablilty. If you have further questions on this issue, please contact Mr. Jeff Jerome, Public Works Operations Division Manager, at 970-356-4000, Extension 3750. Sincerely, BOARD OFCOUNTY CO ISSIONERS Z ' Robert D. Masden, Chair Weld County Commission August 13, 2004 Weld County Commissioner Dave Long 910 10th Street P.O. Box 758 Greeley, Colorado 80632 Mr. Commissioner Long, As a young adult in Weld County, I have been taught the importance of safety. Throughout my years in school and now at work the stress upon this subject has continued to increase. As a result of this, I have noticed the railroad tracks that lie perpendicular to Eastman Park Drive next to Kodak. Seeing that I am a Kodak employee, I hear daily of the danger of these tracks. Many people stress that not only are the tracks a hazard but that they also case damage to vehicles. After hearing multiple stories, I decided that it was necessary to write a letter. I feel that as commissioner you have the power to get the ball rolling. It seems that neither the county nor owner of the railroad wants to take responsibility. I find that this problem, if not fixed, will cause an unnecessary accident. As a leader in our community, I know that you understand the severity of this problem. The safety of Colorado drivers is an absolute must. I thank you for taking time out of your day to read this letter.
