To Whom It May Concern:
The following is a list of issues I've had concerning Tom Potter:
1) Tom has told me that it seems like he's picking on me,but he's really not.
2) Another inspector, not a Weld County Inspector, told me he believes Tom Potter
does hold grudges from what he has heard.
3) On one job,Tom told a journeyman he'd approved the permit on Wednesday and
he was surprised we'd gotten the job ready for an inspection so soon- implying
we had started the job before we had the permit. Actually we had worked some
long days including Saturday to get the job ready for the inspection and to keep
the job moving according to the customer's schedule. I felt this was a comment
better left unsaid; we had the permit and the job ready for the inspection—that
should be his only concern.
4) On another job, Tom Potter was apparently making comments about the job. This
is a quote from my customer. "It seemed like he was trying to make you look bad
to me." Unquote.
5) There have been several jobs that required extra trips to get approval when several
items could have been noted and taken care of later on another inspection. For
example, I called for a Hot-up inspection to get the meter released and get power
to the job. Instead of passing the meter and main service, he would nit pick the
rest of the job and not sign off the service. This would further delay getting
power, requiring at least two trips for me: one to check for approval and another
to make the corrections and finally another trip for the county inspector to re-
inspect the job again. No effort to keep the job rolling was being made; instead
there's extra effort made to delay the job.
6) I have heard of contractors adding to bids because the job is in Tom Potter's area
knowing there will be extra trips, etc. to complete the job.
7) I have also heard of other formal complaints against Tom Potter in the past.
8) How does the Weld County Inspection Department know that Tom Potter isn't
soliciting business for Union Colony Electric while he is on company time?
I personally don't care for the fact that Tom Potter has his own electrical business and I
might have to bid jobs against him. This seems like a conflict of interest to me.
In closing, I would like to comment on the issues presented as a whole. I have been in
the electrical field for over twenty-five years and have owned my own business for nearly
eleven years. It is my job to know the code and safely do the electrical installations. I
also make a point to get along with all inspectors that I have to deal with. I'm not perfect
by any means, but I do take pride in my work and have no problem if there are code
issues. Isn't it ironic that Tom Potter had never passed one of my jobs the FIRST TIME!
I feel Tom Potter has cost my company, customers, and the county money on several
occasions. To me this is not the intent of the Weld County Building Inspection Dept.
How many jobs are done in the county without a permit because of the inspector? How
much does that cost the county? How much do the extra trips to jobs cost the county
when a short phone call would have solved the problem?
Sincerely,

RE: Electrical Inspector, Tom Potter
Dear Mr. Vigil and County Commissioners:
I am writing this letter in support of Mr. Tom Potter as an Electrical Inspector for
Weld County. As an Electrical Contractor in Weld County, I am very pleased with
Mr. Potter's knowledge of the National Electrical Code and his thorough
inspections. I believe that the electrical inspector's job is to protect the
occupants of buildings in Weld County from faulty electrical wiring. There are
safety reasons for the Electrical Codes and I think that by requiring electrical
contractors to comply with the Code, potential accidents may be avoided. By
taking short-cuts in wiring buildings, the electrical contractor is putting the
homeowner or business owner at risk.
In your positions as County Commissioners I hope that your 'commission' to
protect the interest of the citizens of Weld County would lead you to appreciate
the work that Mr. Tom Potter has done through very thorough and fair electrical
inspections. I do not believe that electrical contractors who do wiring that is not
up to code should receive a pass on inspections just because they want to take
short-cuts to save money or because they are not qualified to do the work. Mr.
Potter does not let 'shoddy' work pass. I am in total agreement with this type of
inspection as would be any homeowner or business owner in the county. I hope
that you will be, too.
Thank you for your careful consideration of my concerns in this matter.
Sincerely,
i(Ss OO.1
