The City Council also received a letter Thursday from state Rep. Buck says the Greeley ICE issue has been"muddied by larger immigration debate we're having in the country"and that"extremists on either side of the issue have created a hysteria that has not been helpful for the discussion." Though Martinez thinks relatively few racists live in Greeley, she fears an ICE office would encourage bigots to make daily calls trying to get"different-looking"people removed. "It would exacerbate ignorance and the reluctance to get to know people of color,"Martinez said. "ICE brings fear—fear of racial profiling, fear of people asking what legal status do you have.When an ICE office is planted in Greeley, they're not going to be targeting Asians or Canadians,but Hispanics." Latinos Unidos also sent letters Thursday to Musgrave and Allard expressing concern that their endorsement letters to federal authorities for a Greeley ICE office cited no data or actual numbers. "We are United States citizens and are very concerned that a representative from U.S. Congress would make such a request without any specific facts,"Martinez wrote. Though the spotlight has fallen on Greeley City Council's pending decision on whether to support Buck's resolution, it may not matter in the end. "There's no way to answer how much public demand or approval weighs in on our decision (to build a new ICE office in Greeley),"Rusnok said.
