The following is a summary of written comments IN FAVOR OF THE REFERRED
MEASURE filed with the Designated Election Official:
Arguments For
The Ault-Pierce Fire Department needs new fire stations. Those in favor of Ault Fire Protection District Resolution
5A encourage voters to vote yes to approve funding to build two new fire stations for the fire district.
The all-volunteer fire department currently operates out of two outdated, undersized fire stations, one in Ault and one
in Pierce. The Pierce station is over 30 years old and can only house three emergency vehicles. The Ault station is
over 50 years old and originally housed only one fire truck. It currently houses four vehicles in cramped quarters. A
fifth vehicle with a water tank is stored in an adjacent, unheated building and is removed from service in winter due
to freezing. Emergency vehicles in Ault must access Hwy 14 one-half block from the intersection of Highways 14
and 85. Trains blocking Hwy.14 frequently back auto traffic up 2-3 blocks west, causing delays for fire fighters
trying to get to the station and for fire trucks responding to emergencies.
Current conditions at both stations are crowded and both are too small to house modern sized emergency vehicles.
Vehicle maintenance and cleanup must be completed outside regardless of weather conditions. Neither station has
equipment to vent vehicle exhaust exposing firefighters to unhealthy fumes each time they respond to calls. Neither
station has adequate storage for firefighter gear or medical supplies. Bathrooms are small and have no showers for
volunteers to clean up after a call. Responding volunteers must park on the main street of both communities, taking
up parking needed by customers of local merchants. The Ault station has a undersized training room and the Pierce
station has no training room.
The Ault Fire District has designed two basic, practical stations and is being conservative in budgeting taxpayers
dollars. The District is designing the stations to be similar to reduce design and construction costs. The two stations'
cost is comparable to the cost for one station in other fire districts. The Fire District is applying for low interest
loans and grants to reduce the project's final cost to taxpayers. The Cecil and Marie Peterson family has supported
the District by donating land for the Pierce station.
The new Ault station will be in a new location with better highway access. Each new station will have parking and a
large training room available to the general public for community events and emergency shelter. The stations are
planned to meet the District's current and future needs and will enable the fire department to continue to provide
good emergency service to the people of the growing Ault Fire District.
