Subject: sheriffs dept. workload
Dear Commissioners:
There was an article in the December 26th edition of the Daily Times-Call that, in essence stated, in my
opinion, that Sheriff Cooke believes that the Sheriff Dept. has sufficient personnel to provide adequate
public protection and acceptable response times. However, in many cases that are heard by the Planning
Commission the Sheriff's Dept., represented by Dave Tuttle and assumably with the approval of the
Sheriff, replies to referrals with the statement: "The Sheriffs Office lacks the ability to absorb additional
service demand without the resources recommended in the multi-year plan provided to the Board of
County Commissioners or as indicated by growth not considered at the time the plan was developed".
On the face of it there would appear to be a contradiction in these two positions. Since, there are
regularly approvals of the Board that lead to development requiring additional law enforcement
protection, if there haven't been concurrent increases in the Sheriffs Dept. patrol force, the conclusion
would be that law enforcement capabilities of this department are diminishing. This conclusion being
based on Mr. Tuttle's assertion.
The Board might want to look into this situation and let the public know it actual situation is.
John Folsom
PS: It might be time for the Town of Mead, based on its growth and current population, to be persuaded
by the Board to assume its own law protection services. The Tri-Towns have had the own police
departments since the time when they were smaller than Mead. This might reduce revenue to the county,
but on the other hand, would reduce the law enforcement responsiilties of the Sheriffs Dept. As a genral
statement it might be said that that town's government seems long on protecting its rights and short on
providing services to its residents.
