COLO.
April 15, 1983
Dear Commissioner:
The Fraternal Order of Police would like to take this opportunity to
acquaint your Board with National Police Week, that week in which May 15th
falls in each year.
This year, May 15th, Sunday, will be observed as National Peace Officer
Memorial Day, and police officers and sheriffs across America will be wear-
ing a strip of black tape across their badge in a living memorial to Thou-
sands of their own who were killed in the war against crime.
We all painfully remember that President Kennedy was killed by an
Assassin in Dallas, but how many still recall that Dallas Patrolman J.D.
Tippit was also killed while trying to apprehend the Presidents murderer?
Or that two peace officers were seriously wounded in the most recent att-
empt on the life of President Reagan?
It is vital for all Americans to take this Day and Honor all Police
Officers - living and dead - who stand between society and lawlessness.
' This was one of the reasons why Congress declared the week of May 15th of
each Year as National Police Week and May 15th as Peace Officer Memorial
Day, a day observed by more than 500,000 police officers since 1960.
More and more, officers realize that they are appreciated, and hope
that citizens will recognize the vital work they are doing to maintain our
American way of life.
Colorado has lost more than 120 Police men and women since 1881, and
51 of these have perished since 1960 alone. During 1982, three officers
fell in the line of duty. And the war against crime grows no easier.
Therefore, we request that in honor of these fallen heros of the State
of Colorado, your Board consider a resolution recognizing May 15th as a Day
of mourning in observance of our National Resolution and in demonstrate
your support of this Day by ordering the Flags to be flown at half mast on
all County buildings and facilities. Since May 15 is a Sunday, we would
graciously request that this resolution be extended to include May 16th,
Monday, the first work day of the week.
This will serve as a highly visible tribute to the Law Enforcement
Community and will demonstrate to the citizenry, the support of their comm-
unity leadership for the continuing struggle against lawlessness, in each
and every County throughout this Great State.
We of the Fraternal Order of Police, appreciate your attention to this
matter. Let us all hope and pray that the list of men and women from our
State of Colorado, who all proudly wear the Badge of Trust, will have to
sacrifice no more, and that none of us shall ever forget those who have. . !
In A.pr:, iation,
Angc
President
