This report summarizes the activities of the Weld County Council during the second quarter of the calendar year 2002. April 16, 2002 -Weld County Centennial Center • Supervisor of Weld County Regional Communications, Sergeant Jon Baker, presented a review program regarding the Regional Communications Center formed in 1993 by joining the Greeley Police Department and the Weld County Communications Department. In 2001 the Center handled a half-million emergency calls. The Center provides after 5:00 p.m. answering service for: all Weld municipalities, except Ft. Lupton and Erie; Weld County government; twenty-seven fire departments; two ambulance departments; and Northern Colorado's Airlife helicopter. Sergeant Baker explained modes of communications that are changing the Communication Center's operations including mobile data transmitters and the 800 megahertz digital radio band. • Councilman Douglas Rademacher said that he had conveyed Mr. Koldeway's concerns to Commissioner Vaad regarding Special Review Permit 1360. May 21, 2002 -Weld County Centennial Center • Dr. Mark Wallace, Executive Director of Weld County's Public Health and Environment, gave a PowerPoint presentation regarding public health in Weld County. He outlined the services and activities of the department including: essential public health services, strategic planning, administrative services, grants management, environmental health services, consumer protection, environmental planning, individual sewage issues, public health education, health promotion, educational materials, public health nursing, communicable disease control, emergency preparedness, bio terrorism, and challenges the department faces. Thirty-one grants, totaling $1.8 million, are the largest portion of Weld County's Health Department budget. Weld County provides 40 percent of the budget through direct funding or fees-for-services. June 18, 2002 -Weld County Centennial Center • Commissioners Vaad and Geile and Public Works Director Frank Hempen presented a review program explaining Weld's use of an additional tax levy, totaling $2,675,472., received for use on Weld's roadways. Commissioner Geile outlined the Public Works' Roadway Strategic Plan including: a five-year capital improvement plan; a gravel road plan including adding grader zones, roadway widening, and rover maintenance crews; a dust control plan; a pavement maintenance plan; plans for improvement to strategic roadways and transportation corridors. • The Weld County Council will put out a news release advertising the three Weld County Council positions that will be on the November 2002 ballot. The Council's press release will include instructions regarding how to petition onto the November ballot. Ca 2002-2025 Weld County Council Report to the People July 16,2002 Page 2 of 2 • Council members were urged to gather opinions of Weld citizens regarding what Weld County elected officials should be paid. During the second quarter of 2002, Council members have researched answers to questions and concerns brought to their attention by citizens of Weld County. In that process Council members have talked periodically with the Commissioners and various Elected Officials and Department Heads. Council meetings are on the third Tuesday evening of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Weld County Centennial Center, Greeley, Colorado or at the Southwest Weld County Administration Building, Longmont, Colorado.
