I understand parking is always a concern. However, the part of the article that disturbed me the most was the mention of tearing down the building. The first question that comes to mind is"WHY." The Weld County Garage building would make excellent covered parking. Except for a few offices in the lion of the building along 10°Street,the entire building is nothing but automotive repair bays and interior parking for cars. Why not maintain the integrity of the building and still have the county's parking concerns met by keeping the building intact? It would cost taxpayers less tearing down interior walls than tearing down an entire building. And the concerns regarding placement of the historic sign will have been met by keeping that part of the building intact The facades on every other aide of the building could be changed to reflect that it is a county structure. Just the northeast corner would remain the same. The demolition of buildings in downtown Greeley has got to stop. Otherwise the entire downtown area will be nothing but asphalt paved parking lots. There will be no place to shop or eat. Why not set the example and stop the destruction of our historic buildings downtown by starting with the Weld County Garage building? I hope that all of you will seriously consider this proposal I truly believe that i am not the only voice out there to save the building as it stands. Regardless of what you do to the interior of the structure, saving the historical elements would prove beneficial for everyone, the County, the Historic Preservation Commission, and the community as a whole.
