Re: Petition for Stop Signs at the Intersection of WCRs 21 and 84
Gentlemen:
Thank you for your letter/petition requesting consideration of a 3-way stop sign at the referenced location. I have
referred your request to the Department of Public Works for review.
A field investigation of the intersection will be scheduled and completed by June 14th. The information will then
be reviewed by an engineer using the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, which provides guidance
regarding installation of stop signs.
Based on the field investigation and the engineering review,a recommendation will be made to the Board of County
Commissioners during the week of June 24th if additional regulatory signs are required.
I have asked the Public Works staff to inform you of the results of the study when it is completed. Please contact
Frank Hempen,Jr.,Director of Public Works, at (970)356-4000, extension 3750, if you have additional questions
on this issue.
Because you have taken the initiative to send the letter and petition on this issue, I request you advise the other
interested parties of the status of your request.

Dear Sirs,
The residents of Weld County( listed on Attachment) would like to request signs for a
three way stop at the intersection of County Road 21 and 84. In the last year there have
been several serious accidents at that intersection as well as cars and trucks traveling at high
speeds which greatly exceed the speed limit for unpaved roads. The most recent event
occurred Saturday, May 11, when a car that was traveling at a high rate of speed became
airborne and crashed into a windbreak taking down 5 trees, a power pole, telephone lines,
and a mailbox. The resident of the property was standing 40 feet away when this occurred.
The occupants of the car miraculously got out and fled the scene of the accident.. The men
were intoxicated as are many of the drivers who use this back road instead of Highway 14.
The bottles and beer cans along the ditches indicate that drinking drivers prefer this road to
Highway14 which is more highly patrolled.
Daily there are cars and trucks traveling at high rates of speed on County Road 84. The dirt,
dust, and flying rocks they create are a hazard to the residents and other drivers, as well as
the animals that are in the area. Four residential driveways are within close proximity to this
limited vision intersection which creates a hazard for them every time they pull in or our of
their residence. We feel that it is just a matter of time before a fatality will occur in this area.
Let's be proactive and prevent a tragedy before it occurs!
The growth in this area has increased significantly in the last five years, but warning signs,
speed limit signs, and stop signs have not kept up with the amount of traffic on this stretch
of road. For all of these reasons, we would like the county to asses this area and add the
appropriate signs in the hopes of preventing the next accident.
