In 1974, we built a new home, and after a few years discover that the roof was put on incorrectly. It wasn ' t until we had a wind storm that a roofer inspected the roof to tell us what was wrong. In 1996, we had a new furnace installed. About 3 weeks ago we called on a company to have central air condition installed. After the man checked the furnace, he informs us that the furnace was installed incorrectly. Now, my husband nor I are in the furnace or roofing business , so how was we to know that both the furnace and roof was wrong. The inspector who inspected the furnace was so worried over not having insulation on the walls of the crawl space where the furnace was, that I doubt he even looked at the furnace. The problem with the furnace was of a great danger to both my husband and I, the chamber could have cracked and we both could have had carbon monoxide poisoning. After all that has happened, we feel that we can no longer rely on the Weld County Building Inspectors . We feel it is a shame,as that is why we pay for a building permit. Sincerely, Mrs. Robert F. Brown cc: Weld County Building Inspection Dept. Attn: Jeff w ,_r , Co 4;y a Kits DEPARTMENT OF BUILDING INSPECTION 1555 N. 17TH AVENUE GREELEY, COLORADO 80631 I WEBSITE: www.co.weld.co.us C. PHONE (970) 30, EXT.3540 FAX (9(9 70) 304-6498 COLORADO April 17, 2002 Mr. and Mrs. Robert Brown 6497 Hwy 60 P.O. Box 1400 Johnstown, CO 80534 Dear Mr. and Mrs. Brown: Thank you for your letter of April 8, 2002. I regret that you have had two bad experiences with the Building Inspection Department. Please let me take this opportunity to assure you that your safety and welfare are of the upmost importa to u . Our highest priority is to protect your safety and welfare by conducting the most careful an rough inspection of your home possible. The Building Inspection Department does not specifically inspect roofs during the initial construction of a residence, nor do we require a permit or do inspections for the reroof of a residence. To inspect a roof would require several inspections which would need to be scheduled at specific stages of the work. The Board of County Commissioners has decided not to have the Building Inspection Department inspect residential roofs in Weld County. According to our records, building permit # BC-9600965 was issued for the replacement of a furnace at your house. Inspection records for that permit show that the following inspections were conducted: flues and vents; gas test; final electrical and final approval. The initial inspection request for the final approval resulted in a correction notice with the following corrections noted: insulate exhaust piping with r/2" armiflex; install cover plates for service outlet and service light switch; insulate ductwork or crawlspace. The reinspection resulted in the following additional corrections: insulate crawlspace walls with RI1 insulation or the ductwork with R4 insulation; exhaust vent is to be insulated with 1/2" armiflex. Reference is Weld County Code 20.7.1.4 and the manufactures listing. According to the Weld County Code the inspector was enforcing Weld County requirements that the crawlspace wal s or the furnace ductwork be insulated. It is apparent that the inspector must have read the manufac res 'nstallation instructions in order to know that the exhaust vent was required to be ✓L Service,Teamwork, Integrity,Quality Page 2 insulated, :-The: Spector that conducted the two final inspections referred to above is a very careful i nd through rson who always makes sure that an appliance such as a furnace is installed according codes adopted by Weld County as well as the installation instructions published for the appliance. When I spoke to you on March 27, I asked exactly what dangerous condition the air conditioner contractor found. You were not clear what the problem was. I also asked what the contractors name is so I may contact him to find out what the problem was, but you did not want to give me his name. I welcome the opportunity to personally examine the furnace and meet the air conditioner contractor at your house to investigate the installation problem with the furnace. I want to assure you that the policy of this Department is to protect the safety and welfare of the citizens of Weld County by enforcing the codes adopted by Weld County. In addition we strive to insure that appliances are installed according to their listing as well as to the provisions of the Weld County Code. Please contact me to schedule an inspection of this furnace at your earliest convenience. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
