RELEASE AT WILL
BANNER YEAR SEEN FOR
I-70 IN GLENWOOD CANYON
***************************
NEWS MEDIA TOUR OCTOBER 8
***************************
The Department's highly successful 1984 construction season for Inter-
state 70 through Glenwood Canyon is coming to a close. Assistant District
Engineer Lew Sturm, Glenwood Springs, announced that nearly $40 million worth
of construction has been completed this year or is nearing completion in the
canyon.
The 1984 construction has been performed under the watchful eyes of
the Glenwood Canyon I-70 Construction Review Committee recently created by the
Highway Department. Patterned after the Citizens' Advisory Committee (CAC)
that worked so successfully during the design phases, the Review Committee con-
sists of Sam Caudill, an Aspen architect; Floyd Diemoz, a Glenwood Springs con-
tractor; and Blake Chambliss, a Grand Junction architect. All are former members
of the CAC. The new committee observes actual construction progress and advises
the Highway Department on any conceptual or environmental issues that may arise.
Committee members will tour the project several times each year.
A special tour for the committee, members of the news media, and
Highway Department staff has been scheduled for Monday, October 8. The tour
will include a look at the recently completed Hanging Lake Exploratory Tunnel,
some recently completed bridges and other canyon wall job sites that display
new and unique construction methods along with yet-unseen driver views of the
canyon. To reserve a place on the tour and receive more information, please
contact the Glenwood Canyon Project office in Glenwood Springs at (303) 945-2901
by Friday, October 5.
