RE: Speed Limit/Stop Sign Request on WCR 84
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt:
The Weld County Board of Commissioners is in receipt of your letter dated June 2, 2006, from
you and your neighbors requesting that a speed limit of 35 mph be established on WCR 84
between WCR 19 and 23, children at play signs be erected along this roadway, and that a four-
way stop be established at the intersection of WCR 19 and 84. On behalf of the Board of
Commissioners, I would like to thank all of you for taking the time to write to us with your
concerns about safety. The Commissioners share your concern about safety and we strive to
make all roads within Weld County as safe as is reasonably possible.
Your request has been forwarded to the Public Works Department to allow them to complete an
engineering analysis of the roadway and this intersection. Based on the results of their analysis,
Public Works will make a recommendation to the Commissioners regarding what the speed limit
should be and if an all-way stop is warranted at the intersection. This analysis and
recommendation will be provided to the Commissioners by September 1. Public Works will
provide you with a copy of their findings and recommendation when it is completed. The final
decision regarding the speed limit designation and all-way stop installation will be made by the
Commissioners.
Thank you again for taking the time to write the Board of Commissioners about this matter.
Please contact us again if you have any additional concerns about this or any other issue. In the
meantime, you can also contact Perry Eisenach, Engineering Division Manager with the Public
Works Department, at (970) 304-6496, extension 3758, to discuss this matter in more detail.
Sincerely,
BOARD OF OUNTY COMMISSIONERS

Dear Sirs,
The concerned residents of Weld County ( listed on Attachment) would like to
request a speed limit on County Road 84 between the intersections of County roads 19
and 23 and a four way stop at the intersection of County Road 19 and 84.
Daily there are cars, trucks, and trash trucks traveling at high rates of speed on
County Road 84. The dirt, dust, and flying rocks are a danger and health concern to the
residents in the area. Twelve residential driveways and numerous agriculture driveways
open on to this stretch of roadway creating a hazard. Cars and trucks do not slow down for
people retrieving their mail or walking on the shoulder of the road. Many speed through the
stop sign at the intersection of County Road 21 and 84. The plumes of dust created by
speeding vehicles is a health hazard to people and animals in the area.
County Road 84 now seems to be an alternate route for people who want to
speed and don't want to put up with the heavy traffic on Highway 14. The bottles and beer
cans along the ditches indicate that drinking drivers prefer this road to Highway 14 which is
patrolled. Numerous accidents and fatalities have occurred at the intersection of County
Road 19 and 84.
The growth along this stretch of County Road 84 has increased significantly in the
past few years. Families with children now live and play just a few yards off of the road.
There is also heavy traffic on the weekends with people coming and going into the Black
Hollow Recreation Area. We also understand that there are three housing developments
planned between County Roads 19 and 21 which will compound the problem in the future.
We feel if this issue is not addressed it will be just a matter of time before there is
another fatality. We do not want someone in our neighborhood added to the the large
number of people already killed on Weld County rural roads.
We are requesting a 35 MPH speed limit between the intersections of County
Roads 19 and 23, signs indicating children at play, and a four way stop sign at the
intersection of County Roads 19 and 84. For all of these reasons, we would like the county
to evaluate this area and add the appropriate signs and speed limits in hopes of preventing
the next accident.
Thank you for your consideration in this matter.
