I hope this does not reduce my chances of being appointed to a Focus Group or other citizens' committee related to the MUD Scope Area Update study. John Folsom 7050 Loma Linda Ct. Longmont CO 80504 303 833 2992 January 5, 2005 To the Editor: Referring to the recent Times-Call editorial, indeed, the City should be looking to the east. It is unfortunate that the City did not take the necessary steps, years ago, when it had the opportunity to control development in this portion of Weld County's MUD district. These steps would have included this area in the City's Comprehensive Plan for future urban growth, rather than relegating it to a vague St. Vrain Valley Planning Area designation, and including all of this area in the City's Coordinated Planning Agreement intergovernmental growth area with Weld County. Indeed, the City at one time averred that it had no interest in developing to I-25 at Del Camino, unlike Fort Collins, Loveland, Erie, Thornton and Westminster, which have had the foresight to assure their control of growth to the east of their core boundaries to the interstate. Now, Weld County government, for whatever unclear reasons, is actively pursuing urban development in the area, under County rather than municipal control. It is now trying to justify this by a $500,000 study under the guise of achieving coordination between the interested local governments. This alleged goal is contradicted by the County radically increasing the size of the MUD district, approving scattered urban developments throughout the MUD district and competing with municipalities for approval of urban development contiguous to those municipalities. City officials: the horse has been stolen; you left the barn door open all of these years. There will be a public meeting held in February for input into the County's MUD district study. I hope to see some City officials there armed with proof of the negative effects to all, if the County continues its policy of permitting chaotic urban growth . John Folsom Yahoo!
