RE: EXPRESSION OF SUPPORT TO THE WATER SUPPLY AND STORAGE COMPANY FOR
PROTECTION OF THE GRAND RIVER DITCH REGARDING BILLS TO DESIGNATE
ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK A WILDERNESS AREA
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of Weld County, Colorado, pursuant to
Colorado statute and the Weld County Home Rule Charter, is vested with the authority of
administering the affairs of Weld County, Colorado, and
WHEREAS,various bills have been introduced in the United States Congress to designate
nearly all of Rocky Mountain National Park as a wilderness area; and
WHEREAS,the Grand River Ditch is operated by The WaterSupply and Storage Company;
and
WHEREAS, much or all of the Grand River Ditch is located within the boundaries of Rocky
Mountain National Park; and
WHEREAS, waters diverted by the Grand River Ditch have, for over one hundred years,
been delivered for the irrigation of agricultural lands within Weld and Larimer Counties; and
WHEREAS,The Water Supply and Storage Company currently delivers irrigation water to
approximately 40,000 acres of land located within said Counties and waters diverted by the Grand
River Ditch constitute an extremely important source of water for said supply, and
WHEREAS, The Water Supply and Storage Company is currently striving to ensure that
in the event of passage of an act designating Rocky Mountain National Park as a wilderness area,
the Grand River Ditch and the ability of The Water Supply and Storage Company to continue to
use, operate, maintain and repair the Grand River Ditch, its rights of way, access roads, and
appurtenances are adequately protected and not adversely affected, and
WHEREAS, the Board wishes to express support to The Water Supply and Storage
Company and its efforts, and to express support for S.3986, introduced by Colorado Senator
Wayne Allard in the United States Senate on September 29, 2006.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of Weld
County, Colorado, that the Board hereby expresses its support to The Water Supply and Storage
Company and of its efforts to ensure that in the event of passage of an act designating Rocky
Mountain National Park as a wilderness area, the Grand River Ditch and the ability of The Water
Supply and Storage Company to continue to use, operate, maintain, and repair the Grand River
Ditch, its rights of way, access roads, and appurtenances are adequately protected and not
adversely affected.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the Board that it hereby expresses its support for S.3986,
introduced by Colorado Senator Wayne Allard in the United States Senate on September29,2006.
