As any of you who have been on Steve Vaughan's wonderful field trips to the Pawnee can attest, this is a very special area. No one is proposing to stop this development—nor can they, since it is on private land. There will definitely be visual impacts from very large turbines (windmills), but of greater concern is the impact on birds from the siting of the large array. For the sake of the birds, please consider submitting comments to the developer. Write, as soon as you can --and definitely by mid- September--to tell Greenlight Energy of Virginia that the escarpment and the surrounding shortgrass prairie are important to birders, conservationists and others, and that these are an important part of Colorado's heritage that needs to be protected. If Greenlight Energy realizes that the public is watching it, we hope it will do the right thing. Feel free to cut and paste or edit this sample "quickie" e-mail: Dear Greenlight Energy: I am a Colorado resident who asks you to act as a good corporate citizen and voluntarily follow the Department Of Wildlife's recommendations for your Cedar Creek windfarm near the Pawnee National Grasslands. We care about birds! Thank you. Yours sincerely[your full name and address] Send copies to Matt Hantzmon, Managing Director, matt@glnrg.com and to Kevin Davis, Director of Project Development, kevin@glnrg.com. You can also copy those comments to the Weld County Commissioners at egesick@co.weld.co.us. eerrt. ucil'azT40 2006-2553 2•I/s.cCc 9/8/2006 ILL/Pq6 Page 2 of 2 A bit more info, should you desire it: We want Greenlight Energy, at minimum, to follow the Colorado Division of Wildlife's recommendation that the Cedar Creek turbines be kept 1/2-mile from eagle and prairie falcon nests and 1/4 mile from other raptor nests in the Pawnee National Grassland. These buffers are to protect the nesting birds from human disturbances associated with operating and maintaining the turbines. Indeed, none of the turbines should be within 1/2-mile of the rim --where roughly 75 active and inactive raptor nests have been identified this year. In addition it is important to avoid disturbance of ground-nesting birds during the construction of each of the turbines. This is an extraordinary area, visited by many citizens from all over Colorado, and it would not be in Greenlight's corporate interests to alienate so many people. We hope they will act as good corporate citizens and respect the environment, the resources, and the people of Colorado. 9/8/2006 Hello
