The USDA Forest Service has prepared an Environmental Assessment(EA) to address the
Pawnee National Grassland(PNG)District Ranger's proposal to develop and implement
management and conservation strategies for black-tailed prairie dogs and their habitat on the
PNG. The EA covers an analysis area of approximately 193,000 acres of land managed by the
PNG.
The Forest Service analyzed five alternatives in the EA. Alternative 1: No Action—Current
Forest Plan Direction; Alternative 2: 1,000 acre upper prairie dog population with tools for
management and conservation of prairie dogs; Alternative 3: 8,500 acre upper prairie dog
population with tools for management and conservation of prairie dogs; Alternative 4: 13,800
acre upper prairie dog population with tools for management and conservation of prairie dogs;
and Alternative 5: 34,300 acre upper prairie dog population with no lethal control methods.
The Environmental Assessment is being made available for a 30-day comment period. The
30-day comment period ends on September 6, 2006. Comments may be submitted in writing to:

Attn: Karen Roth, 2150 Centre Avenue, Building E, Ft. Collins, CO 80526, e-mailed to:
comments-rocky-mountain-aapaho-roosevelt@fs.fed.us or via FAX at(970) 295-6696. Only
individuals and organizations who submit substantive comments during the comment period for
the EA may appeal the decision made following the close of the comment period.
Comments on the Environmental Assessment should be specific and should address the adequacy
of the Assessment and the merits of the alternatives discussed. This will better enable the Forest
Service to address the comments. If you wish to remain involved and receive future mailings, you
must either comment on the Environmental Assessment or request to receive further information.
Comments received in response to this solicitation, including names and addresses of those who
comment, are considered part of the public record. Comments submitted anonymously will be
accepted and considered, however, those who submit anonymous comments will not have standing
to appeal the subsequent decision.
