REMARKS: The Aid to Families with Dependent Children and Food Stamp caseloads continued
to show growth during April, 1980. The AFDC load increased by 22 households while Food
Stamp households increased by 183 over the prior month. hest of this growth in load during
April was due to unemployment stemming from the Monfort plant closure.
A total of 16,573 people received some form of public assistance during April. This number
was 6% higher than the preceding month (15,626) and 18% higher than the same month in 1979
(14,070) .
Expenditures for April (excluding Old Age Pension and Food Stamps) were $701,014. This
amount was $51,620 higher than the preceding month and $141,314 higher than the same
month in 1979. Approximately $37,000 of the $701,014 was for retroactive payments,
primarily Foster Care and Homemaker Services, which will not be requested in May. However,
caseload trends, unless reversed, will be driving costs in excess of budget.
As of April 30,1980, the Department remained slightly under budget with 33.1% expended
after 4 months.
