Subject: Uranium Mining
I am writing you about a health and safety issue. You must not allow the uranium mining
to go forward. Remember Love Canal? Do you want to live the rest of your life knowing
you sold out generations for a few dollars? I can afford to move my family from this area
but there are too many who do not have the wherewithal to do the same. Where will I go
where there are not greedy politicians selling our lives for thirty pieces of silver. The
lives of the people of Northern Colorado and those of their children will be in your
hands. Are you trustworthy. There will be long term repercussions are you prepared to
look at your family every morning knowing you are responsible for this disaster?
Sincerely,
Sharon Quarles

WHAT CAN PAST URANIUM ACTIVITY IN LARIMER AND WELD COUNTIES TELL RESIDENTS ABOUT THE
CURRENT URANIUM RUSH?

Counties. None of these were large mining operations, as are proposed in the area today.
However, during the current uranium rush, companies have been active where uranium
is known to exist because of past activities. This clearly includes Weld and Larimer
Counties. At least 19 uranium companies are active in Colorado. At least five are active
in Weld County. The corporation that sold mineral rights to a company that now proposes
to mine in northwestern Weld County also owns substantial holdings in Larimer County.
"We need to get past thinking that this is just a local issue or that it is far
away," said CARD spokesperson Lilias Jarding. "Uranium operations have already tapped on
our shoulder in Larimer County. And if we don't stop the proposed mining, we' ll be
knocked out cold."
Jay Davis, a landowner at the proposed mining site in Weld County, points to past
operations at the Grover Test Site, where there was underground 'in situ' leach mining in
the late 1970s. "We've already experienced small scale in situ mining in Weld County, "
Davis said, "And the reports are not good. The aquifer was degraded by radioactive
materials, ammonia, nitrate, molybdenum, selenium, and boron. There was a 10-fold
increase in one type of radiation."
The current uranium rush is fueled by rising uranium prices. The cost of a pound
of processed uranium "yellowcake" went from $20 in January 2005 to a high of $138 this
summer. The price is now at $78 per pound. Mining executives estimate that they can mine
uranium for about $30 a pound in northern Colorado using in situ leach mining.
C.A.R.D. is a citizens' group that opposes uranium mining. Its website is
