Carey RECEIVED Commander, 90th Space Wing 5305 Randall Ave. F. E. Warren AFB WY 82005-2266 Mr. David Long County Commissioner, District 1 915 Tenth Street P. O. Box 758 Greeley CO 80632 Dear Mr. Long I would like to express my concerns about the condition of certain Weld County roads in the Defense Access Road (DAR) system. Several roads used by commercial traffic involved in construction of wind turbines in North Eastern Weld County now fail to meet minimum DAR standards. I am requesting your assistance in improving these critical roadways. Recent events both environmental and commercial have greatly affected the Defense Access Roads and structures. The Air Force is conscious of load issues, especially during the spring thaw. However, the recent heavy commercial traffic activities have deteriorated the Defense Access Roads to the point our Transporter Erector (75 tons) cannot use these roads safely and the Air Force has had to cancel critical missile field activities. Over the last five years, the Air Force has invested over$8.5M into the Defense Access Roads in the three states we conduct missile operations (CO, NE and WY). The investment in Weld County is being lost due to the high commercial traffic loadings associated with the build-up of the wind turbines. I understand you are working with the contractors using your roads to haul material to the wind turbine project and want to reiterate the requirement for Defense Access Roads. The primary Air Force requirement for these roads is at least four inches of aggregate be on the roadway (up to 24 feet wide) surface. The combination of snow removal and the heavy commercial traffic has made the roads deficient in this requirement. We request repairs to the roads to return them to and maintain them at this standard. GUARDIANS OF THE HIGH FRONTIER Thank you for your continued support of the DAR program and for your future support in maintaining this important transit system. For any questions or additional information, contact Mr. Mark Frank of the Missile Engineering Flight at (307) 773-2438. • MICHAEL J.
