No.: Problem: On 11-7-06 Northern Colorado Geo-tech was on site to observe soil conditions after scarify and recompaction of the pad had been completed and subgrade excavation along the north wall line had been done and noted the area "pumping", density tests performed indicated acceptable compactions were met but the area was still pumping. Doug Lefgren with Northern Colorado Geo-tech is investigating possible amendments. It was discussed that overexcavation of the footing subgrade and installation of 3/4" rock or recycled concrete may be required below the footing. One caution is if rock is placed under the footing the foundation drain indicated on structural, Architectual, and Civil drawings may not perform as designed. Due to time constraints and scheduling of UG plumbing etc. a solution is required immediately. Unstable foundation subgrade soils were encountered along the cut-slope at the northern portion of the excavation. We observed subgrade pumping of approximately 6 to 12 inches. The pumping appeared to be worse over the area of a storm drain pipe that bisects the area. It is our opinion that the unstable subgrade soils should be removed and replaced with recycled concrete to a minimum depth of 12 inches. In the vicinity of the storm drain, it may be necessary to replace up to 18 inches of the subgrade soil, although this decision will need to be made as the excavation of the subgrade is taking place. Roche Constructors has expressed a concern about the perimeter drain that will be placed around the exterior of the foundation. Their concern is that this drain will not be effective to removing excess moisture that may migrate up under the foundation and be trapped in the relatively granular recycled concrete. However, after reviewing plans and similar situations, it is our opinion that the original intent of the perimeter drain was to intercept moisture that may try to infiltrate around the north side of the foundation after running off the adjacent parking lot, etc. In addition, the granular nature of the recycled concrete is designed to maintain its stability even if the moisture content of the soil is increased. Therefore, it is our opinion that the perimeter drain that is to be placed around the exterior perimeter of the building may be placed on top of the recycled concrete and still function as intended. We have a portion of the subgrade (about half) that is over optimum moisture by about 5% but it does not seem to be pumping, we will know better within about an hour or so. It may be that this portion (if it does not pump too bad during proof roll), may just require a thicker asphalt section 7" +1- is what is there now. The east end of the patch however is pumping very bad. Northern Colorado Geo-Tech is on site as well as LaFarge and are leaning to over ex of 18 to 20" using a geogrid matt with recycled concrete to stabilize the subgrade (this is similar to what we had to do to the lot behind the sheriffs dept. (I mean Sheriffs Office building) parking lot. I do not have exact quantities yet but wanted to give notice and request we proceed with best practice determined by Northern , LaFarge and Roche in order to get the asphalt back in this afternoon. Would you be available to meet me or have Dave meet me and get some limits plotted on a plan that we cold attach to your letter in order to quantify and get pricing as well as set up a schedule for the work? We are anticipating UG plumbing start just after the Thanksgiving weekend so any remediation needs to take place next week so as not to further impact the schedule.
