Dear Mr. Garcia, Mr. Jerke, Mr. Long, Mr. Masden, Mr. Rademacher,
As County Commissioners you carry grave responsibilities. That I wish to
address here is the question of Powertech and uranium mining in your county.
Frankly, I see no need to reiterate facts and considerations you have probably
heard ad museum, so will mention two personal experiences which influence my feeling
that any"gains" from the proposed mining would be short-term and limited, likely
leading to long-term irreversible damage to the earth and the human community.
I imagine you are all familiar with Jared Diamond's most interesting book
Collapse. I happened, a few years ago, to hear him speak in Hamilton, Montana as he
was writing the book—and of course in that context he spoke about the gold mining
fiasco in Montana highlighted in the book. It made an impression upon this hearer, one
•
which seems all-too relevant to decisions you will have to be making. Worth rereading
that chapter, I suggest.
Another speaker I heard many more years ago spoke about the mysterious
currents and systems of our earth. If residues of pesticides or other chemicals used
ONLY on American Midwest farms are to be found in Antarctica, can we truly accept
assertions of"safety" for our water and air?
With this in mind -- as well as all FACTS about Powertech itself and what they
propose--I hope you will choose well, with long-term health and welfare of all in mind.
Thank you for your consideration.

opposition to proposed uranium mining in Weld County,
near Nunn.
The CMS board of directors unanimously approved an
action on Nov. 16 to affirm support for the LCMS' s
position against the issuance of a mining permit for
the Centennial Project. The groups' opposition to the
in-situ mining operation is based on "the potential
risks it poses to the health of residents, " according
to the approved action.
The CMS had two committees review the resolution
submitted by the LCMS during October and November. The
issue was debated for as much as four hours, and
testimony was given by members of the Coloradoans
Against Resource Destruction, the LCMS, Powertech
representatives and the president of the Colorado
Mining Association.
"I fully anticipated support and recognize the initial
unwillingness to support our resolution since the
uranium mining controversy has not been publicized
outside of Larimer and Weld counties, " said Cory
Carroll, M.D. , president of the LCMS and the author of
the resolution. "We decided to bring this issue to the
public's attention because we felt that there was only
one true rational conclusion; uranium mining has
inherent dangers and those risks are not acceptable
for the citizens of Nunn, Fort Collins and countless
others communities that use the aquifer. "
The LCMS may attempt to gain support for the
resolution from the American Medical Association,
Carroll added.

Dear Folks,
Attached is a letter from my husband and me regarding our sincere anxiety and interest
regarding Canada-based Powertech Company's desire to mine uranium in northern Colorado.
Please read it. Please do the right thing.

Dear Local Representative:
We write to voice our concern and disapproval regarding Canada-based, Powertech
Company's proposed uranium mine within 11 miles of Fort Collins, Colorado.
Albeit seems we are"NIMBY's,"the issue stretches way beyond our home town—to
Denver and beyond. Powertech's mining plan would take place within and using water
from the Laramie-Fox Hills aquifer, which covers most of the Denver Basin area. That's
about 7000 square miles along the Front Range, from Wyoming to Colorado Springs and
east to Limon. Many different wells use the aquifer: municipal, commercial, agricultural
and residential.
• Labeled "in-situ"this type of mining is considered "benign."Just because it's not
visible doesn't mean it is"safe."We are concerned for the safety of our future
grandchildren's children.
• Beyond benign, in-situ leaching pumps water treated with caustic chemicals into
the ground to dissolve uranium from its sandstone layer—which results in
uranium soap chocked full of heavy chemicals and pumped to the surface.
The environmental risks are high, and we believe that you have a moral responsibility to
protect Colorado residents from the following side-effects of uranium mining:
• contaminated water
• promoting a dangerous and irresponsible energy source: nuclear power
• potential health risks, such as spills, leaks, mechanical failures, and transportation
accidents
• in this case, uranium mining provides benefits to out-of-state companies—not our
local economies
Uranium mining will pollute our state'sprecious waters and expose humans, wildlife,
livestock, and crops to radiation and heavy metal poisoning. Please, as one of our
precious and valued state representatives and public officials, we beg you to have the
courage to stand up against this company.
• Do not provide any permit that would allow uranium mining, period.
• Develop regulations to protect us, your constituents, from use of"in-situ"
leaching technology to mine uranium in Colorado.
• Promote economic development that provides for local people and meets local
needs.
Thank you for your attention to this crucial matter.
Sincerely,
Joseph P. Perna, Postal Employee and Vietnam Veteran

I followed your recommendations and spoke to Tom Honn regarding the inclusion of a
contingency
plan for bringing water out to 40, 000 plus rural residents in the event (certainty) of a
uranium contamination of the aquifer. He is opposed to the idea that it should be included
in the Weld County Comprehensive Plan.
He says that he thinks it should be treated as a separate estimate of cost like they would
to estimate the cost of establishing a new housing project. He also reminded me that the
uranium company in question hasn't even submitted the next land use permit
I listened to several of you talking about the fact that "we have the energy" oil ,gas,
uranium, wind, etc. Improperly drilled oil wells have contaminated ground water. Just last
week one of my Wyoming employee pharmacists brought me a news paper article from Riverton,
Wyo. It is a head line "Pavillion man says his water is contaminated. Apparently En Cana
(oil co) did not properly case off the drilling project in one of more wells and oil was
leaking into the large aquifer he drinks from. There are over 100 residents living in that
area who now have the same problem.
It was apparent to me this morning that you all are eager to have energy companies come to
Weld county. The chances for contamination of property here is not remote. I need to
revisit you at your next meeting. I belong to two anti-uranium mining organizations that
have over 5500 members , all of whom are VERY disturbed that this is being allowed.
Did I hear correctly that your next meeting is next Monday?

Dear Sirs and Madam,
I am writing to voice my opposition to any uranium mining in the State of Colorado and to
encourage you to actively protect our state, communities and water from the effects of
uranium mining. I would request that the Weld County Commissioners Long, Rademacher,
Masden, Jerke and Garcia pass a resolution to prohibit uranium mining in Weld County.
Thank you very much for your attention to and careful study of this matter.
