Mr. Howard:
At your request, CTL I Thompson, Inc. Is pleased to provide this fee estimate for
geotechnical engineering services for a subgrade investigation for the above
referenced project. For preparation of this proposal, you provided us a site map
delineating the project limits. We understand the County desires to obtain
information regarding the existing pavement system and underlying subgrade soils
for use in planning and design of the proposed improvements. Our services will be
limited to subgrade exploration and testing. No pavement design is requested for this
project.
Based on the provided site location map,the project covers approximately 1700 lineal
feet. We estimate drilling 4 exploratory borings along the roadway at a spacing of
approximately 500 feet. All borings will be drilled to a depth of 10 feet. We will collect
and test samples of the subgrade soils, as we deem necessary, In accordance with
Weld County street standards. You have requested Hveem (R-value) tests be
performed for this project. We understand that we will need to provide the necessary
utility locates and traffic control for this investigation.
We anticipate that the County will use our estimate for the basis of establishing a
budget for the project and to issue a purchase order for our services. Our estimated
scope of services and associated fees were prepared according to the terms of our
professional services agreement with Weld County for the year 2007.

Brief description of the problem/issue:
Public Works Department is currently working on designing road improvements to WCR 18 including a new
bridge over the Platte Valley Canal. Improvements include correcting sharp horizontal curves and new canal
bridge. In order to accurately calculate the pavement design we are in need of existing soil boring information.
PW has an existing On-Call contract with CTL Thompson to provide the required geotechnical services
necessary for the design. The scope of work and costs for the services is shown in the attached Work Order No.
3. The proposed costs are not to exceed$3,091.20.
What options exist for the Board? (Include consequences,impacts,costs, etc. of options)
The Board could either accept or not accept the cost associated with Work Order No. 3. Without this
information, a cost effective pavement design could not be calculated.
Recommendation to the Board:
I recommend approval for Work Order No. 3 to CTL Thompson. These costs are consistent with other costs for
projects similar in scope of work.
