Dear Mr. & Mrs. Kindsfather: I am in receipt of your Petition requesting the spraying of mosquitoes in Hill-N-Park Mobile Home Park. I referred this to our staff for prompt attention to determine what the County could do about your problem. Our staff contacted the City of Greeley to see how the city accomplishes mosquito spraying and what their funding resources are. Apparently, Greeley provides for spraying through their Street Department. They have a budget item for insect spraying by the use of general revenues. Unfortunately, the County is unable to do this since insect spraying is not considered a normal function of County government. We have had several calls from various areas in the county regarding insect problems. If we were to provide spraying of insects in all these areas, we would not have sufficient funds to do so. If we were to provide spraying only for certain areas, this would not be fair to the people who were not covered. I referred this problem to the County Attorney to determine what legally could be done on your behalf to eliminate the mosquito problem. Our legal staff indicated that it might be possible for you and your neighbors to set up a pest control district to spray for mosquitoes. As I understand it, the legal process would be to set up a pest control district by petitioning to the Board of County Commissioners. If you are able to do this, then the residents would jointly provide monies for spraying the entire area. Information about setting up a pest control district can be obtained from our Extension Office located at Island Grove Park. Their telephone number is 356-4000, extension 4465. I wish we had sufficient funds to satisfy your problem. Unfortunately, we do not. If you have any further questions that cannot be answered by our Extension Office, you may either call our County Attorney's office or contact me.
