To whom is may concern,
I am a resident of Windsor, CO and am very concerned about the proposed mine in Nunn, CO.
This mine is not even 20 miles from my home. I am concerned about the effect this mine
will have on our health, economy, and quality of life. Please do all you can to stop this
mine from coming to CO. I assume you live in the area, I cannot imagine you want the kind
of pollution this mine can generate to contaminate your family, friends and town. I don't
either. Please do all you can to stop the mine.
Sincerely,
Holly Powell

Subject: uranium mining
Dear Mr. Jerke,
I am writing to ask you to cast your vote to protect our communities' drinking water
aquifers from the in-situ recovery uranium mining proposed by Powertech in the area near
Nunn, Colorado. Powertech's plan to drill into the Laramie-Fox Hills aquifer for uranium
jeopardizes our entire community with the potential release of uranium and other heavy
metals into our drinking water supply. It is widely recognized that there has *never* been
an in-situ uranium project that has succeeded in restoring the surrounding groundwater to
its original baseline condition. The EPA has a well documented history of this particular
mining method' s poor track record in protecting water resources. My husband and I have a
three year old daughter and another child on the way. We have always viewed northern
Colorado as the ideal environment to live and raise our family in. The realization that
this type of uranium mining could take place in our back yard is incredibly disturbing to
us. What kind of future would we be leaving for our children should our drinking water
supplies become contaminated with carcinogenic heavy metals? I implore you, in your
position as a voice of Northern Colorado family values, to adopt a resolution that will
prohibit uranium mining in Weld county.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Tiffany Barnes

MORE MINING COMPANIES EXPLORE FOR URANIUM --
NORTHERN COLORADO FACED WITH HISTORIC CHOICE

Thanks to an investigation by a local reporter, northern Colorado citizens now
know that at least five companies are exploring for radioactive uranium in our area. With
the involvement of additional foreign-based uranium companies, it is clear that our area,
its water, and our way of life are threatened on a historic level.
"We are faced with a historic choice here in northern Colorado, " said Lilias
Jarding, a spokesperson for Coloradoans Against Resource Destruction (C.A.R.D. ) . "We have
been working to become the `renewable energy capital' of the U.S. We can either continue
on this path or allow non-renewable uranium to be mined here. We have a choice between
clean energy with long-term economic benefits - or mining that leaves a lasting legacy of
contamination and stops other types of economic development." Recently, over 1300 jobs
have been generated by the renewable energy industry in our area, an industry that is
supported by C.S.U. research and by Governor Ritter.
A spike in the value of uranium has led mining companies to dust off 25-year-old
reports and stake claims on potential production sites - including places like northern
Colorado, where there has never been large-scale uranium mining. C.A.R.D. , a local
organization, opposes uranium mining. They point out that all uranium projects involve the
release of radiation into the environment, and they are plagued by water contamination and
violations of environmental laws. Over $2 billion - mostly taxpayer funds -- has been
spent over the last 25 years to clean up contamination from past uranium projects - and
many sites are still not cleaned up.
Four of the five companies seeking to mine uranium in northern Colorado are from
other countries - three from Canada and one from Australia. Rising uranium prices are
driven in large part by expected demand in China and India.
Please do everything in your power to listen to the over 3500 concerned citizens who have
already signed our petition imploring our elected officials to protect our water supplies.
Robin Davis
