Thanks you for your response to my concerns about uranium mining, Speaker Romanoff.
I am forwarding you a note that a friend just got from one of the contractors who
are working on the Atlas mill tailings clean up (see bottom of this message) . A note of
interest is the Richard Blubaugh, the VP of Powertech Uranium Corp (one of the uranium
mining companies currently holding an exploration permit in CO, ) formerly worked for Atlas
Corporation, a uranium milling company that declared bankruptcy in 1998 and walked away
from a 12 million ton pile of radioactive mill tailings located 750 feet from the Colorado
River near Moab, Utah. Mr. Blubaugh's contribution was to promote a plan calling for the
company to simply cover the tailings pile with sand and rock, even though a 1998 report by
the Oak Ridge National Laboratory concluded that uranium discharges into the Colorado
River would "persist indefinitely" .
Atlas was required to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement to assess the plan' s
potential impacts, but the company filed for bankruptcy before the EIS could be completed.
Upon filing for bankruptcy, Atlas was released from all future liability with respect to
the uranium mill facilities and tailings pile.
Speaker Romanoff, my husband Jay and I live on the proposed Powertech Uranium
Corporation's Centennial project. They own our mineral rights. I host a 4-H club, board
and train horses as well as give riding lessons to students of all ages. My passion is to
make a difference in the lives of the children and their parents who come my way. We are
currently exploring the possibility of becoming an integral part of the solution to the
newly identified 'nature deficit disorder' by offering a nature experience on a natural
horse keeping ranch to school children. These kinds of dreams are not possible with the
threat of a uranium mine within any vicinity of this kind of operation, let alone right
here.
Please pass regulations that will send a strong statement about how clean water and
a healthy environment are key to a healthy state. Uranium mining is a very dangerous and
toxic activity at all levels and in all types. History shows how the mining companies all
leave the clean up for their operation in the hands of us, our tax dollars. Once they
profit, they claim bankruptcy and leave the mess and health effects behind. I personally
have no desire to become a victim of their ways of doing business.

In 2006 there were over 5, 000 uranium claims filed in Colorado. This is a statistic
directly from the Bureau of Land Management. I was shocked when the woman in charge of
public relations told me that one. I truly do fear for our beautiful state and the
healthy environment we currently enjoy.
Thank you for your time,
Robin Davis

Mr. Edquist,
The Utah Department of Environmental Quality referred your request for information
about the former Atlas millsite to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) . Thank you for your
interest in the Moab Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action (UMTRA) Project. DOE assumed
ownership of the former Atlas millsite in October 2001. Since then, DOE has spent
approximately 60 million dollars through fiscal year (FY) 2007 . These costs have been paid
for by the federal government; the State of Utah does not participate in cleanup costs
associated with the Moab UMTRA Project. Anticipated FY 2008 funding is approximately $23
million.
Additional information about the Moab UMTRA Project can be found on our website at

Dear Mr Garcia,
I am writing to you to express my oppostion to the proposed Centennial mining project.
My husband and I are long time Weld residents and feel it would be a tragedy to allow our
beautiful county and state to be used in such a way. Generations to come will pay for
this project by dealing with contaminated air, land, and water. Please vote against this
project. Thank you for your time.
