Dear Interested Party:
The USDA Forest Service has prepared an Environmental Assessment (EA) to address the
Pawnee National Grassland (PNG) District Ranger's proposal to continue applying prescribed
fire on the Pawnee National Grassland. The PNG has been applying prescribed fire on the
Grassland annually for approximately 13 years. The PNG is conducting this EA to allow the
public to comment and to analyze the use of prescribed fire on the PNG for the next 10 to 15
years. The EA covers an analysis area of approximately 193,000 acres of land managed by the
PNG.
The Forest Service analyzed three alternatives in the EA. Alternative A: No Action—Prescribed
fire would cease as a management tool on the PNG; Alternative B: Proposed Action—
Prescribed fire would be applied to the PNG on 8,000 to 12,000 acres annually; Alternative C:
Modification of Current Management—Prescribed fire would be applied to the PNG on zero to
6,000 acres annually.
The Environmental Assessment is being made available for a 30-day comment period. The
30-day comment period ends on August 15, 2008. Comments may be submitted in writing to:
Pawnee National Grassland, Attn: Beth Humphrey, 660 O Street, Greeley, CO 80631, e-mailed
to: ehumphrey(n,fs.fed.us, or via FAX at (970) 346-5014. Only individuals and organizations
who submit comments during the comment period for the EA may appeal the decision made
following the close of the comment period.
Comments on the Environmental Assessment should be specific and should address the adequacy
of the Assessment and the merits of the alternatives discussed. This will better enable the Forest
Service to address the comments. If you wish to remain involved and receive future mailings, you
must either comment on the Environmental Assessment or request to receive further information.
Comments received in response to this solicitation, including names and addresses of those who
comment, are considered part of the public record. Comments submitted anonymously will be
accepted and considered, however, those who submit anonymous comments will not have standing
to appeal the subsequent decision.

The EA is available for review at the Forest Supervisor's Office at 2150 Centre Avenue in Fort
Collins, CO or at the Pawnee National Grassland Office at 660 "O" Street in Greeley, CO, or is
