RE: Coordinated transit within Weld Co.
DATE: November 11, 2008
It has been brought to my attention that Weld County has recently been examining ways to
improve transit services for its residents. Because CDOT has been providing Federal funds
for the Weld County service, I have been asked to comment on whether CDOT is generally
supportive of the efforts that have been undertaken.
Weld County hired a consultant to look at the County's transit system and identify
redundancies and areas where efficiencies and quality of service improvements could be
made. Coordination with the City of Greeley's transit service, The Bus,was one of the
consultant's positive recommendations. It is my understanding that the consultant has looked
at the feasibility of the county contracting for service with the City.
Given that the City and County service areas overlap in places, and given that some riders
may use both services, CDOT supports efforts to reduce those overlaps. CDOT
acknowledges that coordination of governmental efforts to improve transit service is
consistent with CDOT's emphasis on coordinated and integrated transit services. It is also
consistent with the intent of several Federal programs that CDOT administers.
Therefore, CDOT is supportive of your efforts to bring about a serious dialogue between
governmental entities and service providers and to identify improvements to local and
regional transit service.
