I live in Evans, Colorado. (Approximately 20 miles from the proposed mine site) My family, friends and community will be directly affected by the pollutants the mining WILL cause in its wake. These toxic pollutants will leech into our water supply, the air my children breath, and the food we and our live stock eat. I am equally concerned with the impact this will have on the rest of the Front Range and neighboring states. Weld County can use open land more wisely for environmentally friendly sources of energy such as wind farms and/or solar power. These sources will not harm the environment, people, and livestock they are in and produce far more energy. The uranium ore that is proposed to be extracted, by Powertech, is documented to be of the lowest grade of uranium. Is this worth the lives and well being of thousands and/or millions of people in the surrounding areas that live off of this land? Our Government has procedures in place to prevent construction companies from polluting storm drains with silt and debris, which in turn, pollutes our rivers. If it is important to keep such minor pollutants out of our water ways, then why would we allow some of the deadliest toxin to be leeched into not only just the water ways but land and air? Examples of the many dangerous toxins that will be released in tailings, by the mining process, are as follows: Selenium, Radium (which causes head and bone cancers, and leukemia) , Arsenic, Chromium, Uranium, Polonium-210 and many others. These are known to be deadly, especially when accumulated in the body over time. To add to all the dangerous and deadly toxins from this process, an extremely large amount of fossil fuels will be burned 1 Malan: :s-Yw /-ly-;ALC9 further polluting our air. Another concern of ours is the aftermath of the mining process. What are we, as a community, supposed to do with the land once they have carved into the earth and left these toxins exposed? A couple of places come to mind, such as, Rocky Flats & Rocky Mountain Arsenal. These are just two of many in our beautiful state that have been destroyed by toxic pollutants. As my representative, I ask that you do everything in your power to stop this project. Sincerely, Becky Mander Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Uranium prices fueling new speculation At its current price, about $873 million worth of uranium sits at the proposed mine s northwestern Weld. Pete Webb, a spokesman for Powertech, said the company is going to apply for the mine at the site from Weld County in December 2008. The intricate regulatory and permitting process ensures that the mine will be safe fo: the public, he said. It is Powertech's first foray into uranium mining, but the opposition is fueling public the project, Webb said. In addition, many large corporations such as Exxon Mobil have abandoned uranium and smaller companies are taking their place, said Lowerre. He added that many sm companies don't have the capital to absorb price fluctuations in the uranium market go bankrupt, leaving state or federal authorities the task of cleaning up. Near the end of the piece, Clement makes his own factual assertions: In fact, two in-situ uranium operations were successfully conducted and closed ii Keota and Grover) in the 1970s, to the total satisfaction of the state of Colorado, impact on the public or environment. In contrast to his earlier admonition to opponents to present supporting data, he cit The Grover in-situ uranium leaching project was operated by the Wyoming Mineral the Weld County town of Grover, and about 25 miles northeast of Greeley. Becau: deposit, the project was designed to test the economics of various leach solutions mining was conducted. After completion of aquifer restoration activity, the well fields were sealed. A few weeks later, well water samples Department of Health. Three months later, additional samples were taken by the two entities as well as Colorado In a 1981 research study of the Grover project by CSU graduate student Kenneth S. Wade, the author concludes Restoration after in situ mining can restore groundwater to baseline total dissolved solids (TDS)but leaves I nitrate, and selenium elevated above premining levels. Of special concern are the high gross alpha and be standards for toxic levels. ...Further research should be undertaken to identify the sources of alpha and beta radiation in restored grou Earlier in the paper, the author discusses the observation that radioactivity and uranium levels actually increased 2- The variations in the radiochemical parameters(Table 8)through time often appears erratic, but wells G-5, and beta activity, as well as uranium concentration, during the three months. This indicates the leach field t 18th, 1979. These parameters are significantly higher than the baseline values and the trend indicates they radionuclides mobilized by the leach solutions may have been adsorbed by clays or complexed by organic i depressed by the clean water recycling and TDS reduction restoration methods. With the termination of res radioactive products until equilibrium is established. It is also possible that the hydrogen peroxide in the lea state in which uranium and other radionuclides are soluble. The Wade paper contradicts Mr. Clement's assertion of no negative impact to the environment from the Grover in- regulators were"totally satisfied"with the closure of the project, it appears that residents of the area were left with heavy metals.
