Maguire, Jr. GREELEY% CO- President, Erie Airpark Homeowner's Association 25800 South Main Erie, Colorado 80516 Re: "Bird Population at the Erie Landfill Site" Dear Mr. Maguire: Enclosed is a copy of a report from the Ornithology Study Committee for the'Erie Landfill Area During Operation of the Landfill". This report was transmitted to this Department in March. 1982, after the investigation of bird habitats and observing 48 kinds of birds in the vicinity of the Erie Landfill. This Study began in June, 1980, and was conducted for a four month period prior to beginning the landfill. It was continued for 12 months after the site became operational to evaluate seasonal variations and the impact of the landfill on bird populations. One of the twelve conclusions stated: "No clear trend of population increase or decrease was detectable due to the operation of the landfill". This Department and the Ornithology Study Committee urged the continuance of the study by Landfill, Inc. to determine any increase in bird hazards, from this source, for an extended time period. This was agreed to by Landfill, Inc. Mr. Brad Ke:irnes., of Landfill, Inc. reported that the Ornithologist con- ducting the study (Dr. Maynard Stamper) , was retained to continue the study as recommended. The Waste Management Division has requested a report of supple- mental findings. Any documentation of bird hazards attributable to the land- fill, the Erie Airpark Homeowner's Association has should be submitted to Landfill, Inc. and the Ornithology Study Committee: 820395 PLDLO 3l r to 17t_ 9 1/3/n.— 4210 EAST 11TH AVENUE DENVER,COLORADO 80220 PHONE (303) 320-6137 Mr. James Maguire Tr. The latest inspection report indicated a satisfactory operation. Observations and pictures indicated gulls and other bird flocks were not prevalent at the landfill site, when inspected. I appreciate the concerns of the Association relative to potential bird ha 'ards attributable to the Erie Landfill. The Waste Management Division will continue to conduct inspections, surveillance and monitoring activities and provide information to the Association concerning findings of the on- going study directed by the "Ornithology Study Committee". Should there be a confirmed bird hazard, attributable to the landfill, Landfill, Inc. will be required to provide appropriate corrective and preventive measures. Should there be questions or if this Department can be of further assistance, please contact Mr. Kenneth L. Waesche, Director of the Waste Management Division. Sincerely, / Dr. Frank A.
