May 10-16 National Police Week
May 15 Peace Officers Memorial Day
Whereas, the Congress of the United States of America has designated
the week of May 10-16, 2009, as National Police Week, and Friday, May
15, 2009, as Peace Officers Memorial Day, and
Whereas, law enforcement officers are guardians of life and property,
defenders of the individual's right to be free and live under a constitution
that allows for these rights to be exercised, and tireless workers in the
fight against crime and other wrongs to society, and
Whereas, every 65 hours during 2008, an American Law Enforcement
Officer died in the line of duty somewhere in this country, and during
2008, 134 brave men and women lost their lives in the performance of
their duties. Our community joins with other cities, towns, and counties to
honor all peace officers everywhere throughout our great nation.
Now, therefore, be it hereby resolved that the Board of Weld County
Commissioners does hereby proclaim the week of May 10-16, 2009, as
National Police Week, and Friday, May 15, 2009, as Peace Officers
Memorial Day in and for Weld County. We call upon all citizens in Weld
County to honor and show sincere appreciation for the Peace Officers of
this county by deed, remark, and attitude. We call upon all citizens to
make every effort to express their thanks to our officers who make it
possible for all of us to leave our homes and families in safety each day
and to return to our homes knowing we are protected by men and
women willing to sacrifice their lives, if necessary, to guard our loved
ones, government, and way of life, against all those who would violate
the law and seek to destroy our way of life.
