We would like to commend all 21 commission members for their hard work and their dedicated pursuit of better government for Weld County. The citizens of Weld County owe you much appreciation for your efforts and your devotion. We applaud your decision to present the proposed charter to the public at 13 public hearings in all parts of the county. This is more than 4 times the required number of public hearings. They will give every citizen in Weld County an opportunity to evaluate and comment on the Charter. Thank you for taking on this extra work load. Whatever the outcome of the charter election, 21 persons have become intimately acquainted with current Weld County government, a multitude of department heads have evaluated and explained their functions, and many more persons have become the informed and active citizens upon which the League feels democratic government depends. The League agrees that the appointment of citizen advisory boards is a valuable technique for producing informed and actively participating citizens. Citizen input helps insure that government remains responsive to the people. We are pleased to see incorporated into the charter the philosophy of broad community representation for all boards and commissions. We hope such factors as economics, age, sex, minority heritage, and consumer interest will be used as guidelines to achieve this broad representation. The League originally proposed the election of a Home Rule Charter Commission with the hope that a charter would respond to more people. The increased number of county commissioners proposed by the charter is an excellent step in the direction of more responsive government. The expansion of the Board of Health, the Planning Commission, the Hospital Board, and the Board of Adjustments is also a positive step toward government that is more responsible and more aware of the will of the people. We are pleased with these areas of the proposed charter. By its very nature, this proposed home rule charter, through its specified referendum and initiative processes, results in government that is more accessible and responsive to the people. The amendment procedure also allows for changes to be made in the charter in response to future needs of the county. The League of Women Voters of Greeley-Weld County thanks each Charter Commission member for their diligence and devotion to the task of writing a home rule charter for the people of Weld County. Hello
