This report reflects the Baseline Assessment data gathered in Fall 2008 for the children enrolled in the FENWC Regional Head Start program. Each child enrolled in the Head Start program is assessed using the Creative Curriculum Individual Child Profile. Teachers observe children as they participate in everyday activities and then assess their progress on objectives three times a year as "Forerunner," "Step I," "Step II," or "Step III." "Forerunner" level offers teachers a way to identify children who are not yet at the initial level of typical preschool development but show beginning evidence of developing the skill. Step I approximates a beginning level of typical preschool development. Steps II and Step III represent higher levels in acquiring the particular skill. This assessment and the outcome information gathered from it are used to help direct and guide the lesson planning and instruction process. Head Start programs are legislatively mandated to collect and analyze data regarding 13 specific elements and indicators in language, literacy and numeric skills. The program summary graphs included in this Outcomes Report reflects the following data gathered from the FENWC program: Language: Understands an increasingly complex and varied vocabulary Develops increasing abilities to understand and use language Uses an increasingly complex and varied spoken vocabulary Literacy: Phonological Awareness Associates sounds with written words Book knowledge and appreciation Print awareness and concepts Recognizes a word as a unit of print Identifies at least 10 letter of the alphabet Knows that letters of the alphabet are a special category Math: Number and Operations ' Areas evaluated in this column include: Classifies objects Compares/measures Arranges objects in a series Recognizes patterns and can repeat them Shows awareness of time concepts and sequence Uses one-to-one correspondence Uses numbers and counting The program summary graphs also include a column of data gathered regarding the children's development in the areas of Science, Creative Art, Approaches to Learning, Social Emotional, and Physical Health.
