COLORADO
MEMORANDUM
TO: Board of Commissioners DATE: February 17, 2009
FROM: Pat Persichino, Public Works Director
SUBJECT: 2009 Concrete/Washed Rock/Squeegee Bid, 80900067
The Public Works Department recommends that the Board of County Commissioners award the washed
rock bid to both Rock Products of Colorado and Varra Companies. Rock Products of Colorado was the
lowest bidder at $9.00 per ton. However, they have only one plant from which we can pick material up.
The next low bidder was Varra Companies at $10.75 per ton. Varra Companies has five plants from
which we can pick material up.
The Public Works Department recommends that the bid for squeegee be awarded to both Pioneer Sand
Company and Varra Companies. Pioneeer Sand was the lowest bidder at $1.15 per ton. However, they
have only one plant in Fort Lupton. Varra Companies and Aggregate Industries were both second low
bidder at $2.95 per ton. Aggregate Industries indicates material can only be picked up at this price from
their Greeley plant. Varra Companies has several plants from which we can pick material up so we
recommend they receive the bid for squeegee along with Pioneer Sand.
The Public Works Department recommends that all concrete for northern and southern Weld County be
awarded by Varra Companies. They were the lowest bidder on all types of concrete with the exception of
Flow Fill and were $1.00 higher per yard than the lowest bidder, Bestway Concrete. A minimal purchase
of flow fill material is anticipated for 2009 so we recommend all concrete be awarded to Varra
Companies. Their prices are $59.00 per yard for Flow Fill; $81.00 per yard for State Class B; and $87.50
per yard for State Class D. Prices are for both northern and southern Weld County.
A total of $65,000 is budgeted for this purchase.
