PROCLAMATION
COMMEMORATING DEARFIELD'S HISTORY
AND PRESERVATION EFFORTS
SEPTEMBER 27, 2009
WHEREAS, in the early 20th century, O.T. Jackson founded the Dearfield Town
Site in Northeastern Colorado as a dry -land farming community for African
Americans in his pursuit of the ideals inspired by Booker T. Washington's Up
From Slavery, and
WHEREAS, numerous African Americans families followed Jackson and
settled the area, during its heyday from 1910-1940, Dearfield boasted two
churches, a schoolhouse, filling station, grocery, lunchroom, and dance pavilion,
and
WHEREAS, although the combination of the Dust Bowl and Great Depression
severely limited the success of this endeavor, forcing the town inhabitants to
leave, the Black American West Museum, in conjunction with Colorado
Preservation, Inc., and other partners, has worked for years to preserve and
interpret the site and,
WHEREAS, on September 27, 2009, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., the Dearfield
community will join together to celebrate history, culture and preservation of the
historic townsite.
NOW, THEREFORE, LET IT BE KNOWN that the Board of Weld County
Commissioners does hereby join the citizens of Weld County in commemorating
Dearfield's history and ongoing preservation efforts.
