SUBJECT: 2009 Tandem Axle Dump Truck, B0900039
The Public Works Department recommends the bids from Colorado Mack Sales and Service, Transwest
Trucks and McCandless Truck Center be rejected for not meeting these minimum specs:
430 Horsepower
1,550 Foot Pounds of Torque
Parallelogram Snow Plow Hitch
Heavy -Duty Class Vehicle
120 Gallon Fuel Tank
2,000 Cold Cranking Amp Batteries
Colorado Mack bid the following: 425 Horsepower, 1,540 Foot Pounds of Torque on both bids and the Snow
Plow on one bid was a flat plate hitch.
Transwest Trucks bid an M2 class of vehicle which is listed as a medium -duty vehicle per the Freightliner
website. The snow plow is acceptable with the OJ Watson Option.
McCandless Truck Center bid the following: 100 Gallon Fuel Tank, 1,950 Cold Cranking Amps and the Snow
Plow was bid as a flat plate hitch.
The Freightliner M2 112 is listed on the Freightliner website as a medium -duty vehicle. Although it has a
heavy-duty suspension, it is still a medium -duty vehicle. Every loaded mile is expected to be at a gross vehicle
weight of 54,000 pounds. When in winter operations, the vehicle must carry the added weight of the snow
plow, sander, and a full load of salt and sand. This vehicle has specs that indicate a pintle hitch and is
intended to pull a three axle equipment trailer with a trackhoe on it. The gross combination vehicle weight
could reach 80,000 pounds which is currently the maximum for this type vehicle in the State of Colorado.
We therefore recommend the fifth low bid from MKC Kenworth for one Tandem Axle Truck with the OJ Watson
plow be accepted at a cost of $152,512.00. Both MKC Kenworth and OJ Watson are local vendors.
