In a low income household one of the large expenditures is food and yet it is considered flexible. Targeted population of the federal USDA grant is households below 185% of Federal Poverty Guidelines. County population has estimated 66,408 people (27.9%) at the 185% FDG. Youth targeted groups are children attending schools with 50% or more free and reduced lunches, 44.2 of current Weld County PK-12 student populations receive (16,056). Often these families have no or inadequate health insurance and health care costs can lead them in dire economic conditions. The overarching goal of the Colorado Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Nutrition Education (SNAP -ED) plan is to provide programs and activities to improve the likelihood SNAP participants and eligible populations will make healthful food choices within a limited budget and choose active lifestyles consistent with the 2005 Dietary Guidelines and the MyPyramid Food Guidance System. In Colorado SNAP -ED will be called Food Assistance Nutrition Education (FANE) to be consistent with the food component, the Food Assistance Program. Options for the board: Accept the grant proposal, request revisions of proposal or deny proposal. Recommendation to the board: To accept the 2009-2010 FANE grant proposal written.
