MEMORANDUM
TO: Clerk to the Board DATE: October 30, 2009
FROM: Janet Carter E.I., Public Works
SUBJECT: Installation of Traffic Regulatory Signs
A Request Resolution from the BOCC directing Public Works to install traffic regulatory signs at various
intersections and segments of roadways. Please See Attached Spreadsheets.
Stop Signs (R1-1): The Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) section 26.05 suggests that stop
signs should be used if engineering judgment indicates that one or more of the following conditions exist:
A. Intersection of a less important road with a main road where application of the normal right-of-way rule
would not be expected to provide reasonable compliance with the law;
B. Street entering a through highway or street;
C. Unsignalized intersection in a signalized area; and/or
D. High speeds, restricted view, or crash records indicate a need for control by the STOP sign.
Speed Limit Signs (R2-1): The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) recommends posting the
speed limit within 5 mph of the 85 percentile speed limit (page 2B-10). Other factors such as road
characteristics, roadside development, accident records, and shoulder conditions may be considered when
establishing speed limits.
