Re: Proposed Transfer of Prairie Dogs into Weld County
Dear Mayor Lange:
On Monday, July 6, 2009, the Board of County Commissioners of Weld County, Colorado, had the
opportunity to discuss the City of Longmont's proposal to transfer prairie dogs from the Vance
Brand Municipal Airport in Boulder County to property located in Weld County.
CRS § 35-7-203(2) defines prairie dogs as "destructive rodent pests." With that definition in mind,
all of the Commissioners are opposed to allowing prairie dogs to be transferred into Weld County.
Additionally, the Board will not approve "intra-county" transfers of prairie dogs when asked by the
Colorado Division of Wildlife.
No Weld County Commissioner is willing to introduce a Resolution to allow the City of Longmont
to transfer prairie dogs from Boulder County into Weld County, pursuant to CRS § 35-7-203(1).
