Ladies and Gentlemen:
I am writing in regard to your letter dated September 7, 2010, proposing a recreational
shooting area north of Colorado State Highway 14. I have several concerns and observations
with your proposed shooting area and have listed them below.
1. The proposed area is far to close to Highway 14. Highway 14 is a very heavily
traveled road and the danger of possible stray bullets is unacceptable. Highway
14 is the route the state has designated for northern Colorado oversized load
traffic. This compounds dangers and distractions to vehicle traffic and other
activities occurring in the area.
2. Unsupervised shooting areas promote irresponsibility of the participants. In
order to be the best stewards of the Pawnee National Grassland, only a constantly
supervised shooting area would afford the least negative impact to the area.
3. Currently there is a gun range on WCR 51 approximately 1.5 miles south of
Highway 14. Because of the close proximity of the proposed sites to this
established gun range a shooting range more in the center of the Pawnee National
Grassland would be a more feasible place for a shooting range. This would
cause less negative impact to neighboring private lands from trash, unsafe
shooters and general overall public safety.
4. As Weld County's population continues to grow,a more remote location miles
away from Highway 14 on the Pawnee National Grasslands would allow for a
safer environment for all.
5. The map you included shows the proposed sites to be located south of Highway
14. Your letter indicates they are north, why the discrepancy?
I have lived along Highway 14 for more than 38 years. I have had my mailbox shot several
times and because of the shootings the United States Postal Service allowed me to move the
box off of Highway 14. I have had to pay for barb-wire fence to be repaired because wires
have been shot apart. I have been in my yard and heard bullets whiz by me. I am opposed to
a shooting range this close to my property.
